Originally released by Philips Classics on VHS and Laserdisc in 1991, the 13-part Mozart on Tour series chronicles the journeys of the child, adolescent and adult Mozart across Europe, in what was ultimately to prove a futile pursuit of fame and fortune. Each episode is centred on a different European city and combines travelogue-style narration with musical excerpts and period re-enactment.

Ce documentaire part sur les traces de l’homme derrière le mythe. Il propose un voyage, raconté par Mozart lui-même et son entourage par le biais de sa correspondance, pour tenter de rétablir des vérités sur sa vie et de mieux connaître sa musique qui nous touche tant et tous. La pianiste Anne Queffelec évoque avec passion la vie de Mozart à Vienne et à Prague, en particulier dans le fameux théâtre des Etats où il dirigea les « Noces de Figaro » et « Don Giovanni ». On découvre également : Salzburg, avec une étonnante visite dans la chambre forte de la fondation Mozart, un véritable sanctuaire où sont préservés ses lettres ou encore ses premières partitions… Le film se termine au cimetière Saint Marx, près de Vienne, où il fut enterré.

For John Cuttin it all started with the first sip of the wine of her life. A "Marzemino", a typical wine of the province of Trento, quoted by Lorenzo Da Ponte in his libretto for "Don Giovanni" by Mozart. The instant he tasted the blood-red drop of nectar John felt a sort of pleasant and mysterious explosion of the senses, and from that moment on, his nature is transformed. In just three years, from shy bank clerk and faithful husband became director, tombeur de femmes and the most revered and respected expert on wine in Italy. Just as he had predicted the enigmatic "Professor" who had convinced him to taste his first glass of wine. The only event that the "Professor" with his accent and his piercing blue eyes, had not predicted was that he would soon be charged with the murder of his wife Adele. While being put under pressure by the Commissioner Sanfelice, John is to reflect on the last three years of his life, dominated by a single and mad passion: wine.

Highlights include performances of Jedermann from 1920 to the present day, featuring actors such as Maximilian Schell and Klaus Maria Brandauer; Don Giovanni (with Furtw ngler in 1954 and a controversial performance directed by Peter Sellars in the 90s); a wealth of footage of Herbert von Karajan, including performances and never-seen-before home movies; and film of the Nazi hierarchy at the Festival during the Second World War.
