Exhaustive 30 CD collection from the Jazz legend's short-lived label. Contains 44 original albums (421 tracks) plus booklet. Every record-collector has run across an album with the little sax-playing bird in it's label-logo, right next to the brand name Charlie Parker Records or CP Parker Records. Turning the sleeve over, especially if it was one of the non-Parker releases, and seeing a '60s release date under the header Stereo-pact! Was as exciting an experience as it was confusing. Was the claim Bird Lives meant more literally than previously thought?

Art Pepper is widely considered to be one of the greatest alto saxophonists of all time. Born in California in 1925, Art Pepper came to prominence during the 1950s as one of the major soloists of the West Coast and cool jazz movements. But his playing changed dramatically later in his career, as he took on the influence of new stylistic developments in the jazz world.

While Art Pepper's career was nearing an end when this quartet date was recorded in Tokyo, he substituted timing, knowledge, and experience for flash and power on this LP's six tunes. His alto and occasional clarinet work had color, conviction, and edge, which compensated for the loss of tone and speed from his peak days. Pianist George Cables was the group's top soloist, sometimes playing with remarkable fire and other times underscoring a direction began by Pepper or providing soothing melodies or enticing answering themes. Even near the end, Pepper's solos maintained an intensity that was commendable, and this date will delight both his fans and general jazz audiences.

Altoist Art Pepper was at the height of his career during his final five years. A brilliant improviser in the 1950s, by the late '70s the many dark experiences he had had in life were reflected in a deep emotional intensity in his playing. He played each solo as if it might be his last and his passion was brutally honest. This giant 16-CD Galaxy set features Pepper at the peak of his powers.

George Cables has been the pianist of choice for saxophonists Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper; Pepper called him his favorite pianist. Cables also recorded a lot with jazz stars Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson and Frank Morgan. On Cables' own new trio album, he is so fluent in the ways of the keyboard, song structure and harmony, so aware of his available options at every second, the compositions themselves seem as if they are being made up on the spot. But not all of the trio's decisions are made in the moment. As a structural feature, he loves yoking together his left hand and Essiet Essiet's bass, to give the music an extra-fortified low end. They play in tight unison so often, those doubled bass lines have become the trio's signature. Fused piano and bass have such a distinct color, when they merge it's almost like another instrument making an appearance. The trio polishes it's music to a high gloss, which is so unassumingly good, you could miss just how good it is. It gives good taste a good name.

When Milcho Leviev left Bulgaria, it was 1970. A new generation has grown up since. Can you possibly imagine how much music has flowed under his fingers since then, how many concerts, records, arrangements and compositions he has done. And all these have been beyond reach in his native country, his music was arrested and silent. It was yet another enormity of a society the memory of which will still be haunting our dreams for years to come. Yet, in spite of everything, of the distance and the impossibility of normal communication, Milcho Leviev's influence on the development of Bulgarian jazz did not decrease. His ideas in the 60's were the basis for almost all young musicians to set forth on their way.
