Smoothing of Multivariate Data provides an illustrative and hands-on approach to the multivariate aspects of density estimation, emphasizing the use of visualization tools. Rather than outlining the theoretical concepts of classification and regression, this book focuses on the procedures for estimating a multivariate distribution via smoothing.

This graduate-level textbook aims to give a unified presentation and solution of several commonly used techniques for multivariate data analysis (MDA). Unlike similar texts, it treats the MDA problems as optimization problems on matrix manifolds defined by the MDA model parameters, allowing them to be solved using (free) optimization software Manopt.

This book offers a new, fairly efficient, and robust alternative to analyzing multivariate data. The analysis of data based on multivariate spatial signs and ranks proceeds very much as does a traditional multivariate analysis relying on the assumption of multivariate normality; the regular L2 norm is just replaced by different L1 norms, observation vectors are replaced by spatial signs and ranks, and so on. A unified methodology starting with the simple one-sample multivariate location problem and proceeding to the general multivariate multiple linear regression case is presented.
