A few months after the end of World War II, with the international community outraged at the excesses committed by Germany, trials against war criminals were convened in Nuremberg, the symbolic seat of Nazism. There was a series of twelve trials, but it was the first that was the most prominent. Top military and governmental figures including Goering, Hess, von Ribbentrop, and Doenitz were among those first prosecuted. Later trials followed against doctors, bankers, industrialists and others.

The whole world was closely observing the Nuremberg trials from 1945 to 1949 when Nazi-Germany's most prominent leaders were indicted and punished for wartime atrocities and crimes against humanity. It was the first international trial for such crimes and set standards for today's prosecution of war crimes all over the world.

In 1945, Stuart and Budd Schulberg were sent to Europe to gather film evidence of Nazi crimes. The two brothers were part of a special OSS unit. The material they gathered was eventually put to use prosecuting top Nazi officials at Nuremberg.

This Emmy-award winning film gives a concise and analytical account of the first Nuremberg Trial and its twelve successors. It explores the trials against the background of the emerging Cold War and the shifting allegiances of former wartime allies and enemies in the immediate post-war period. On the 19 November 1945, the International Military Tribunal was opened in the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, Germany.
