Uversal Music/Polydor will release 30th anniversary editions of Nirvana‘s classic 1991 album Nevermind album, in November. While the 4CD+DVD set from ten years ago was concerned with alternate mixes, rehearsals, BBC sessions and Live at the Paramount, a decade on and there is a big focus on live performance. In the 5CD+blu-ray super deluxe, the album itself has been remastered from the original analog tapes (the previous remaster was generally disliked by fans) and added to that are four complete concerts from the Nevermind tour from Amsterdam, Netherlands; Del Mar, California; Melbourne, Australia and Tokyo, Japan.

20th Anniversary Edition. 90 page special collector's book - unreleased photos and exclusive memorabilia. 70 total tracks - 35 unreleased. Nevermind was never meant to change the world, but you can never predict when the Zeitgeist will hit, and Nirvana's second album turned out to be the place where alternative rock crashed into the mainstream. This wasn't entirely an accident, either, since Nirvana did sign with a major label, and they did release a record with a shiny surface, no matter how humongous the guitars sounded. And, yes, Nevermind is probably a little shinier than it should be, positively glistening with echo and fuzzbox distortion, especially when compared with the black-and-white murk of Bleach.

Nirvana's sophomore album and major label debut mainstreamed Seattle grunge and elevated Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic from a critically acclaimed cult band to generational spokesmen who had unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Rising to number one and ultimately selling over 30 million copies globally, "Nevermind" would become much more than one of the most successful and influential albums of its, or any, era.

Considered by many to be the leading lights of the Seattle grunge scene of the late 1980s/early 1990s, and perhaps the most influential rock band of Generations X & Y, Nirvana was a powerful trio of musicians who brought a unique aesthetic to a growing-stale rock scene…

Arriving several months before Nirvana's Nevermind, the Smashing Pumpkins' debut album, Gish, which was also produced by Butch Vig, was the first shot of the alternative revolution that transformed the rock & roll landscape of the '90s. While Nirvana was a punk band, the Smashing Pumpkins and guitarist/vocalist Billy Corgan are arena rockers, co-opting their metallic riffs and epic art rock song structures with self-absorbed lyrical confessions. Though Corgan's lyrics fall apart upon close analysis, there's no denying his gift for arrangements. Like Brian May and Jimmy Page, he knows how to layer guitars for maximum effect, whether it's on the pounding, sub-Sabbath rush of "I Am One" or the shimmering, psychedelic dream pop surfaces of "Rhinoceros." Such musical moments like these, as well as the rushing "Siva" and the folky "Daydream," which features D'Arcy on lead vocals, demonstrate the Smashing Pumpkins' potential, but the rest of Gish falls prey to undistinguished songwriting and showy instrumentation.

Any discussion of the Top 100 '90s Rock Albums will have to include some grunge, and this one is no different. A defining element of that decade, the genre (and the bands that rose to fame playing it) was given credit for revitalizing rock at a badly needed moment. That said, there's far more to the story. Our list of the Top 100 '90s Rock Albums, presented in chronological order, takes in the rich diversity of the period.
