Springsteen pays tribute to Woody Guthrie with a set-opening, debut cover of "Tom Joad" on Akron 9/25/96. Even without playing the title track, Akron captures one of Bruce's purest performances on The Ghost Of Tom Joad tour. The 23-song set features eight songs from the album, the then-unreleased "It's The Little Things That Count," standout readings of "Nebraska," "Atlantic City" and "Reason To Believe," plus Born In The U.S.A. outtakes "Murder Incorporated" and the striking "Shut Out The Light."

Born in the U.S.A. is the seventh studio album by American rock singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on June 4, 1984. His popular and commercial triumph, it found Springsteen marking a departure in his sound – while the predecessor, the dark and acoustic Nebraska featured songs of pessimism and isolation, Born in the U.S.A.'s lyrics expressed signs of hope in the daily fight of the standard American in following the American Dream, a new feeling complemented by synthesized arrangements and a pop-flavored, radio-oriented sound that helped Springsteen to extend his already-growing popularity and dominate the mainstream audiences.

It's understandable to label '90s Bruce Springsteen as a lost era. The Boss disbanded the E Street Band in 1989 and his only long-players during that time—Lucky Town, Human Touch and The Ghost of Tom Joad—marked an "experimental" turn away from arena rock. (Releasing three albums in ten years seemed especially like a slowdown since two came out on the same day in 1992.) Of course, that overlooks his soundtrack work—which earned him an Oscar and multiple Grammys—his steady touring throughout the decade (culminating in the E Street Band's return in 1999), and the fact that he and his wife were raising young children. Still, from 1993-2002, when The Rising debuted, there was precious little Springsteen to pore over.

Bruce Springsteen had become increasingly downcast as a songwriter during his recording career, and his pessimism bottomed out with Nebraska. But Born in the U.S.A., his popular triumph, which threw off seven Top Ten hits and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, trafficked in much the same struggle, albeit set to galloping rhythms and set off by chiming guitars. That the witless wonders of the Reagan regime attempted to co-opt the title track as an election-year campaign song wasn't so surprising: the verses described the disenfranchisement of a lower-class Vietnam vet, and the chorus was intended to be angry, but it came off as anthemic. Then, too, Springsteen had softened his message with nostalgia and sentimentality, and those are always crowd-pleasers…

Back in 1979, Bruce Springsteen was all set to release the follow-up to the previous year’s Darkness on the Edge of Town. After legal problems made the wait between that album and its predecessor, the breakthrough Born to Run, a long three years – an eternity in the ’70s – Springsteen was more than ready to get back into the studio.

A rare stop in Omaha prompts Springsteen to include six songs from Nebraska in this 26-song set from the Wrecking Ball tour. The show opens with a rollicking "Reason To Believe," a horn-driven "Johnny 99" and a potent "Atlantic City." Rarer still is a solo electric take of "State Trooper" (in the song's last performance to date) and the only band arrangement of "Highway Patrolman" since 1985. Sign requests include "Sherry Darling," "Lost In The Flood," "Trapped" and the season's first "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" in the encore.
