Milestone studio LP number ten for Bradford, England's NMA is their best and most jarring since 1993's The Love of Hopeless Causes, and possibly 1986's blistering The Ghost of Cain. It's a seat-of-the-pants ride through punk-edged rock and cooling breather songs, taking all of Justin Sullivan's long experience and transmitting it into something so fierce but beautiful that it's often breathtaking. Whoever picked Chris Kimsey to produce was on the ball; High recalls the resounding hellfire of his Killing Joke work on 1984's Night Time and 1986's Brighter Than a Thousand Suns. (Think "Eighties" and "Love Like Blood") And these guitars and organs are like a Geordie hollow-body Gretsch attack! Three songs speak volumes for this corker.

Changing bassists (adding Jason "Moose" Harris), but not the bass sound, NMA's next release, The Ghost of Cain, trades a little of its reverb for a MOR album which sold poorly in America. In Great Britan and Germany, however, the band realized a cult following. The sound was further expanded with the addition of Mark Feltham's harmonica on "Poison Street" and "Ballad." "Poison Steet" was released as a 12-inch dance remix and made a dent into that market. "Heroes," another song about the differences between generations is the highlight of the album.

The band that could only have been English, steeped as they were in history hundreds of years old, both lauded and derided for their almost fashionably unfashionable clothes and stance, began the '90s with a provocative piece of work. Hailed by some as the heirs to the Clash's mantle, yet apparently out of step with many of their supposed contemporaries in what was the goth movement, the band foraged ahead with music that was individual, confrontational, and intense. Their sound was marked by the use acoustic guitar and a single electric guitar without any major effects.

New Model Army celebrate 30 years of releasing music this year with what the critics are calling their best ever album Between Dog and Wolf . Mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Tool, Bad Religion) in L.A. The album sounds distinctly different to any previous NMA album, with comparisons to Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd. A New Model Army documentary feature film Between Dog and Wolf: The New Model Army story has been filmed and will be released in early 2014 in UK independent cinemas, and has been entered for the Sundance Film festival. The first video from the album March in September is edited from the film. Album features stunning artwork from longtime collaborater Joolz.

Although they were playing before a packed hall of rabid fans, singer Justin Sullivan isn't much in the mood for conversation, cutting the crowd's effort short with a pointed, "I don't understand a word, sorry." But they understand him and happily lap up the music New Model Army unleashes. It's an invigorating show, delivered with the band's usual panache, if not their typical fire – radio jitters, perhaps. Still, they serve up a set that spans most of their career and even reaches all the way back to their debut album for "Smalltown England." Immediately following it with "Archway Towers" and "51st State," New Model Army plants the Union Jack firmly in Berlin's Einsporthalle, albeit while simultaneously exposing their homeland's uglier underbelly.

According to the sleeve it is in fact a compilation, but it is generally regarded as a studio album and is therefore counted as the band's second studio album, Vengeance (1984) being their first. It also marks the band's first release on major record label EMI. It was released in 1985, and was to become the last album of founding member, Stuart Morrow. The album reached #22 in the UK albums chart.

Joining New Model Army's seminal 1984 debut, Vengeance, with a collection of tracks recorded for BBC Radio 1 around the same time, Small Town England is the ideal representation of the group's pre-Capitol/EMI output. Replete with original bassist Stuart Morrow, who gave singer/guitarist Justin Sullivan's charged anthems a dark, powerful bottom, this two-disc set chronicles a fiery post-punk band on the brink of greatness. Early singles like "Bittersweet" and "Vengeance" are preserved in all their glorious thump (thanks to merciless kitman Rob Heaton), but the real reward for diehards is in the rarely heard radio sessions.
