Coming off a double Oscar win for his Breakfast at Tiffany's score, Henry Mancini produced this score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy. This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler "The Sounds of Hatari," which features some nice treated piano.

New Orleans holds a special allure like that of no other city, and its most famous music has cast its spell on the world for more than a century. New Orleans jazz has been discussed and written about nearly as much as it has been performed, and its recordings have been issued and reissued constantly since 1917. Many of the earliest seminal recordings are muddy and indistinct due to the primitive equipment used. Many reissues of this material have clouded the sound even further.

Keiko Matsui may be the star of this Jazz Channel Presents concert and have won a few Smooth Jazz Awards, but the Japanese-born, classically influenced keyboardist's music is not jazz–at least not if your definition of jazz includes swinging, the blues and improvisation, all of which are in relatively short supply in this nearly 90-minute performance. Not that it matters, really. Whatever you call the style–"contemporary instrumental" seems as good a term as any–Matsui is one of its more appealing, and certainly most popular, exponents.
