Considering Marco Minnemann s EEPS was TMMP s second-favourite album of 2014, expecting its successor to top it might seem somewhat unreasonable on paper. Still, with Celebration Marco has done just that. For this 18-track (very) long player, the lighthearted quirky-playful approach which permeated EEPS has been largely set aside in favour of grim, determined seriousness. Opening tune Miami sets the tone with thrashy guitar, ominous brass, the occasional spy movie chord, and some cheeky synths to remind us that behind it all, Marco Minnemann s sense of the tongue-in-cheek is still present, if markedly restrained.

Dance-Pop, Synth-Pop, Electro | Interscope Records / Universal Music #UICS-9185

Mayhem is a studio album by American singer Lady Gaga. It was released on March 7, 2025, through Streamline and Interscope Records. During the creation of the album, Gaga collaborated with producers such as Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Gesaffelstein, resulting in an album that has a "chaotic blur of genres", mainly synth-pop, with industrial dance influences, and elements of electro, disco, funk, industrial pop, rock and pop rock. Thematically, it explores love, chaos, fame, identity, and desire, using metaphors of transformation, duality, and excess. The album was recorded at Rick Rubin's studio Shangri-La, in Malibu, California. Mayhem received critical acclaim with reviewers deeming it a strong return to form to Gaga's pop roots, specifically The Fame (2008). Reviewers highlighted the production, stylistic diversity, album cohesion and noted stylistic inspiration from artists such as David Bowie, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Siouxsie and the Banshees. It became her highest-rated release on Metacritic.

Post-Hardcore, Alternative | Country: United Kingdom (Camberley) | Label: Big Scary Monsters

Devolver, the second solo album from Jamie Lenman, may well be the most eclectic album of his career to date, a smorgasbord of musical styles and elements fused together and filtered through the perspective of one of the country's finest songwriters. The evidence is plentiful; I Don’t Know Anything begins with a bass line that sounds like the procreated offspring of The Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight and Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust. The industrial dirge that permeates throughout Mississippi evokes the dark, twisted downward spiral that percolates throughout the work of Nine Inch Nails. Bones sounds like louche lounge music that’s been hi-jacked by an overdriven bass tone, as if Norah Jones decided to jam with The Melvins after one too many G&Ts.

Based on the hit comic book about a man who returns from the dead to avenge his killers, the film adaptation of The Crow suffered a cruel irony when star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee) died during production after a bizarre onset accident. That event only deepened the film's aura of death and gothic unease, moods that are brilliantly underscored by this well-chosen collection of stark alt rock, dark metal, and industrial dirges.
The opener, the Cure's typically angst-ridden "Burn," is about as sentimental as this album gets, bookended by Jane Siberry's wistful "It Can't Rain All the Time." Sandwiched in between is a virtual primer on powerful mid-1990s alt and industrial rock, from Nine Inch Nails hammering Joy Division's "Dead Souls" into its own image to the blistering snarl of Helmet, Pantera, and the Rollins Band. So-called pop-song scores often have a cheap afterthought feel to them; this one, a refreshingly integral part of the film itself, stands as a great album in its own right. –Jerry McCulley
