Nineteen+eighty Four+(1984)

1984 is a studio album by the English keyboardist Rick Wakeman, released in June 1981 on Charisma Records. After reforming his band The English Rock Ensemble in 1980 and completing a European tour, Wakeman entered a recording deal with Charisma and began preparing material for a studio album. He decided on a concept album based on the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. The lyrics are by Tim Rice. The album received a warm reception, and peaked at No. 24 on the UK Albums Chart. Wakeman promoted it further with a world tour throughout 1981.

Each release in our Yearbook series contains a vinyl edition with a selection of tracks from the complete line-up of the CD version. Inevitably, this means that a large number of fabulous tracks are not included on the LP versions… and we also released a companion CD Extra for each year. At the end of 2022 we released NOW Yearbook 1980 - 1984: Vinyl Extra a 5LP boxset containing one album per year for the period 1980-1984, each with an incredible selection of tracks taken from either Yearbook or the Extra and not previously included on a vinyl edition.

Now That’s What I Call Music continue their CD collections of 1980s twelve-inch mixes with a new 4CD set: NOW 12″ 80s: 1984 Part Two. This set follows up Part One from January and what with this being 1984 and all, it’s rather predictably good – if familiar.

Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart were commissioned to score the 1984 film adaptation of George Orwell's classic masterpiece. Most tracks are instrumentals, but this soundtrack yielded two UK singles for the duo: "Sexcrime (1984)" was quite popular on mid-80s dance floors and the ballad "Julia" is named for protagonist Winston's lover and the heroine of the story.

The Warning is the first studio album by American heavy metal band Queensrÿche, released on September 7, 1984. Queensrÿche wrote the material for The Warning during their tour in support of the Queensrÿche EP, inspired by world events and the 1949 George Orwell novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The album was recorded in various recording studios in London with Pink Floyd-producer James Guthrie.
