1914, la Première Guerre mondiale. Noël arrive avec son cortège de cadeaux venant des familles et des états-majors. Mais la surprise ne vient pas des nombreux et généreux colis arrivant dans les tranchées françaises, allemandes ou écossaises. Car c'est l'impensable qui se produit : pour quelques instants, on va poser le fusil pour aller, une bougie à la main, voir celui d'en face, pourtant décrit depuis des lustres, à l'école aussi bien qu'à la caserne, comme un monstre sanguinaire, et, la musique coutumière des chants de Noël aidant, découvrir en lui un humain, lui serrer la main, échanger avec lui cigarettes et chocolat, et lui souhaiter « un joyeux Noël », Frohe Weihnachten, Merry Christmas. C'est alors qu'on assiste à une "réconciliation passagère" des trois camps qui vont, sur le no man's land, près des cadavres des trois camps, fêter Noël ensemble. Puis, pris d'attachement, les chefs de ces trois camps vont sauver mutuellement leurs ennemis. Une histoire réelle oubliée de l'Histoire elle même.

In 1914, World War I, the bloodiest war ever at that time in human history, was well under way. However on Christmas Eve, numerous sections of the Western Front called an informal, and unauthorized, truce where the various front-line soldiers of the conflict peacefully met each other in No Man's Land to share a precious pause in the carnage with a fleeting brotherhood.

When war breaks out in the lull of summer 1914, it surprises and pulls millions of men in its wake. Christmas arrives, with its snow and multitude of family and army presents.

But the surprise won't come from inside the generous parcels which lie in the French, Scottish, and German trenches. That night, a momentous event will turn the destinies of four characters: an Anglican priest, a French lieutenant, an exceptional German tenor and the one he loves, a soprano and singing partner. During this Christmas Eve, the unthinkable happens: soldiers come out of their trenches, leaving their rifles behind to shake hands with the enemy.
