This program brings together a wide variety of Alan Hovhaness’ works including numerous world premiere recordings. These range from the earliest of his band compositions, the processional Tapor No. 1, to more recent chamber pieces such as the gentle barcarole of Vision on a Starry Night. The Ruins of Ani returns us to the tragic location also explored in Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 23 ‘Ani’ (available on Naxos 8.559385), while the Three Improvisations on Folk Tunes evoke dances from the Indian subcontinent. Newly discovered works with percussion include the Japanese-influenced overture to Hovhaness’ opera The Burning House alongside October Mountain, now a classic in its genre.

Prokofiev’s 1937 Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution sets – during the "Great Terror" – central texts by Marx, Engels, Lenin and Stalin on a gigantic choral and orchestral scale. Alongside military tumult and sonic euphoria, the score also offers three instrumental movements as moments of reflection. An exceptional historical document, music of the highest compositional level.

Her first single, the modern girl group gem, "They Don't Know," was released in 1979. Though it failed in the charts, it was later a major hit for Tracey Ullman. Kirsty MacColl switched to Polydor in the '80s and landed a U.K. Top 40 hit with the novelty song "There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop (Swears He's Elvis)." She followed the single with her first LP, Desperate Character, in 1981. In 1984, she married producer Steve Lillywhite and put her solo career on hold, raising their two children and working as a backup singer.

As You Go was mainly recorded in Silverlake and North Hollywood, with integral pieces captured in Mar Vista while Britt was house-sitting for Dan Heath and in upstate New York where Angel was living when she contributed to "Nameless." "Orion" would not exist without the Mellotron lent to us by Dave Sitek. This album would not exist without the heartache of loss, the beauty of healing through music, and the support of our families and close friends. October's Child would not exist without Carron Mitchell.

“‘Blackbirds and the Sun of October’ really represents my influences, even from my past. There is everything in there: my passion for jazz, classical, progressive . music. It’s definitely a song that sets a tone for the rest of the album.” – Federico Albanese Based only on the title and the cover art, you wouldn't be weird for thinking that pianist Federico Albanese has abandoned his primary instrument and his penchant for delicate, ambient classical crossover to indulge in a folksy exploration of Harvest–inspired acoustic indie rock. Albanese has not pivoted to a rustic six-string, some open chords, and a notebook of rhyming couplets, but he has sought to give Blackbirds and the Sun of October a decidedly different tone than his previous records. Though born in Italy, Albanese has spent the last few years working in Berlin; in fact, his entire career has developed while he was living in the city. As may be familiar to those who have entered the family-and-kids phase of life, his roots beckoned him, and, a couple of autumns ago, he left the modern, urban cityscape of Berlin and returned to his more pastoral birthplace where, unsurprisingly, his inspiration experienced something of a shift.
