Diego Pinera is a unique figure who is genuinely taking music in new directions by juxtaposing the polyrhythmic freedom of jazz with other metric systems. As he says, “I studied music in the places where it came from.” He started playing drums as a four-year old in Montevideo. His student years were spent in Havana, Boston (Berklee) and Leipzig.
Based in Berlin since 2003, he has continued to widen his musical horizons, immersing himself in the ‘odd’ meters of the title through extensive work with Berlin-based musicians from Greece and Bulgaria.‘Wisdom’ here refers not just to Pinera’s accretion of wide knowledge and consummate skill, but also to mystery and alchemy: the track “Conversations With Myself” is a hushed, concentrated masterpiece. His ear for fresh colours and timbres is astonishing.

An engaging and dynamic mix of compositions from this young protegé of the late Keith Tippett, where the jazz is strongly influenced by the English pastoral tradition. The result is both brand new and nostalgic, conjuring up a strong sense of atmosphere and place.

London’s very own brazen popstar GIRLI announces her debut album Odd One Out, due on 5th April via PMR/Virgin EMI. The highly anticipated debut album ‘Odd One Out’ was co-written by GIRLI with various collaborators such as Fast Friends and MNDR / Peter Wade (Charli XCX, Brooke Candy) written and recorded in Los Angeles. ‘Odd One Out’ follows from GIRLI’s Hot Mess EP and features fan favourites Day Month Second, Hot Mess and Young. The 8-track album marks the new mature alt-pop sound from GIRLI. Drawing inspiration from real life experiences ‘Odd One Out’ explores identity and the difficulties of adolescence.

Saxophonist Nick Hempton follows up on his sharp, post-bop effort The Business with another polished gem of the jazz form, Odd Man Out. Noted pianist Art Hirahara returns for this release, as does bassist Marco Panascia and drummer Dan Aran, and as before, the set list is mostly Hempton originals with a couple of covers tossed in for good measure. There is one notable change, however, and that is the addition for four tracks, anyway of ace trombonist Michael Dease. It s a pairing that, quite simply, works.
