Japanese edition with 1 more track (Traveling), different running order and track durations. This CD features the revived Modern Jazz Quartet during their 30th year (counting a seven-year "vacation"), playing some of their usual repertoire – such as "Django," "The Cylinder," and "Bags' Groove," which for some reason was renamed "Bags' New Groove" – before an appreciative audience at the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival. In reality, this release adds little to the MJQ's legacy, since all of the songs but vibraphonist Milt Jackson's "Monterey Mist" had been recorded before (some of them many times), but it does show that the band still had its enthusiasm and the ability to make the veteran material sound fresh and swinging.

Long before "La La Land" or "Birdman" Jazz was a perfect way to underscore and even enhance the action on the silver screen - not only in Hollywood, but all the way across Europe, too. Some of the best and most influential Original Jazz Soundtracks from the 1950s and early 1960s are documented in this unique 10 CD collection. Beginning with Miles Davis' iconic soundtrack to Louis Malle's "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud", whose leading actress Jeanne Moreau can be seen with the trumpeter on the cover of our box set, and leading all the way to Henry Mancini's score to Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil". In between you will enjoy American Jazz greats like Art Blakey, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, and The Modern Jazz Quartet, but also legendary Polish composer Krzysztof Komeda with the score to one of Roman Polanski's first films "Knife In The Water", British Jazz-scores by Dizzy Reece and Johnny Dankworth, or soundtracks by French Jazz greats from Barney Wilen to Martial Solal.

Features 24 bit remastering and limited edition. Release Date: December 04, 2013. The idea of the Jazztet playing arrangements by John Lewis written especially for them is intriguing. According to Gene Lees' liner notes, Art Farmer first approached Lewis about writing something for the sextet, to which the composer replied that he'd rather score an entire record. Even though the Jazztet and Lewis' own group, the Modern Jazz Quartet, are dissimilar in many ways, the marriage is a successful one.

The musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet for its entire history, John Lewis found the perfect outlet for his interest in bop, blues, and Bach. Possessor of a "cool" piano style that (like Count Basie's) makes every note count, Lewis with the MJQ has long helped make jazz look respectable to the classical music community without watering down his performances. After serving in the military, Lewis was in the Dizzy Gillespie big band (1946-1948).

This is a reissue (first time on CD) of the seminal album by legendary German clarinetist/composer Rolf Kuhn (born 1929), recorded with a quintet, which also included his younger brother pianist/composer Joachim Kuhn (born 1944), bassist Klaus Koch and two Polish Jazz legends: saxophonist Michał Urbaniak and drummer Czesław Bartkowski. The album presents six pieces: three original compositions by Rolf Kuhn, two original compositions by Joachim Kuhn and one arrangement of a folk tune. Over the years this album achieved a legendary status and became a highly sought after collector's item, because of its political implications, as well as being one of the earliest East European Jazz recordings and an important cornerstone of European Jazz in general.

“How often do we step back and realize what a gift it is to have this music in our life?” asks acclaimed trumpeter, composer and Greenleaf Music founder Dave Douglas. On Gifts, his newest Greenleaf project, Douglas harnesses that feeling of simple wonder with a new book of pieces and four intriguing takes on Strayhorn songs, premiering a new quartet with poll-sweeping tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and two members of the Oscar-nominated post-rock trio Son Lux: guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang. The sound is harmonically spacious, with no bass, but a full, sonically adventurous guitar palette from Bhatia that frames the group’s trumpet-tenor melodic concept in fresh and unexpected ways.
