Pittsburgh’s Ghost Hounds demonstrate once again why they rule the new generation of classic rock-influenced bands on their fourth studio release First Last Time. The new set comes out July 28th, 2023 on the Gibson Records imprint and shows off Ghost Hounds’ strong riff-and-lyric-based sound in a major way. The band writes straight-up, guitar-centric blues/rock that combines a snapping rhythm section, guitar and songwriting firepower, and high-value vocals to create original songs that impact the human soul like the greats of old without ever imitating any of them. That trick sounds a lot easier than it actually is and pulling it off requires a deep, nuanced understanding of what makes timeless rock and roll. Ghost Hounds are clearly in possession of said understanding and use it intuitively, stacking up song after song that you simply must hear again.

The early 1970s were a pivotal time for Diana Ross. In 1973 alone – between touring and performing for SRO crowds in Vegas, she managed to record enough material for a number of different projects. Last Time I Saw Him (1973) was just one of several Ross releases that year as she worked on the still unissued To the Baby album, which was filled with songs for her daughters.

THE FIRST TIME…FOR THE LAST TIME is collection of demos a then-unknown Shania Twain recorded in the late 1980s and early 1990s for Canadian label Limelight Records. Written in collaboration with Los Angeles producer Paul Sabu, the songs here are not country music, but rather well-crafted, energetically performed pop/rock fare. Though the production is often dated (particularly on the cruise-ship-dance-party-sounding “For the Love of Him” and the Laura Branigan-esque “It’s Alright), the tracks definitely offer repeated glimpses of Twain’s superstar potential. There are even a few country-tinged numbers (“Bite My Lip,” “Luv Eyes”) that presage Twain and Mutt Lange’s multi-platinum Nashville/arena rock hybrids. Though recordings contained herein have been made available in several other forms, this package goes the extra mile by offering both the original recordings and significantly re-mixed/remastered versions on two different discs.

One of the most popular jazz pianists during his lifetime, the great Erroll Garner played by ear and never learned to read music. Nevertheless, he created a highly personal and unmistakable style. He also composed wonderful tunes, the most famous of which is the immortal “Misty”. Presented here is the complete LP One More Time (Harmony HS-11268), represented on tracks 2-10, and consisting of a selection of Garner’s brilliant Columbia recordings. Two versions of the aforementioned “Misty”, as well as 11 additional hits, fill out this release.

Lou Busch was a major arranger/conductor who created an alter ego for himself in the guise of Joe 'Fingers' Carr, the ragtime and honky-tonk pianist. Lou Busch, who played piano with Hal Kemp in the '30s, re-emerged in the '50s and '60s as a ragtime revivalist. These 1960 and 1961 LPs (the latter with Ira Ironstrings) capture his finest finger work as you hear six sweet medleys plus Too Fat Polka; Stumbling, and more!
