It is well known that Felix Mendelssohn’s sister Fanny was a highly talented musician, but fewer are familiar with the fact that there were two other musical siblings in the Mendelssohn family: Rebecka, a gifted singer, and Paul, a very competent amateur cellist. It is to Paul, a banker by profession, that we owe the existence of much of Felix’s music for the instrument, which in spite of Beethoven’s endeavours hadn’t yet become firmly established as a duo partner of the piano. Fitting comfortably on a single release, Mendelssohn’s works for cello and piano are here presented by Christian Poltera and Ronald Brautigam, who open with the Variations concertantes in D major, composed in 1829. Brautigam has recently released the composer’s Lieder ohne Worte, performing them on a copy of a piano by Pleyel from 1830, and plays the same instrument on the present disc. Meanwhile, Poltera has chosen to equip his 1711 Stradivarius cello with gut strings, and together the two musicians and their instruments create a sound which is both flexible, transparent and vigorous – ideal for Mendelssohn’s scores.

Having already teased the taste buds with the release of ‘Burn The Money’ last month and now the music video released for ‘Destroy Me’, Brisbane rockers Young Lions are ready to release their brand new album, their first since January 2015, titled ‘Mr Spaceman’. What better way than to release it on a peak time on the Lunar Calendar – Tuesday August 8 2017 – the day Australia witnesses a partial lunar eclipse. Quite fitting for an album that follows a character on a journey into space.

A countryman of Bela Bartók and a sometime teacher to both György Ligeti and György Kurtág, Sándor Veress emigrated to Switzerland from what was then part of Hungary in 1949. Settling in Bern, he collected various prizes and teaching posts while working in relative obscurity on who knows how many pieces–most of which have been unavailable. This collection is made up of a pithy trio of compositions dated 1938 (Six Csárdás), 1951 (Hommage à Paul Klee), and 1952 (Concerto for Piano, Strings, and Percussion), and they show what a deftly melodic force Veress was. He's thrilled by blustery string wafts, especially in the concerto, where the percussion adds drama and immediacy. But he also favors sweetly chipper string formations, which surprise the ear during the homage to Klee, especially given the dissonances fostered early on by the twin pianos. The closing piano miniatures of Six Csárdás are counterpoint-rich gems, played with sharp precision by András Schiff.

Brazilian cellist Antonio Meneses, a member of the Beaux Arts Trio and a frequent collaborator of the world’s greatest conductors and orchestras, takes a solo turn with the most noble of works for his instrument, J S Bach’s Six Cello Suites. A consummate master of his instrument, Antonio started playing the cello when he was 10 years old. At the age of 16 his musical studies took him to Europe, and in 1982 he won the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and New York Philharmonic, among others, with such conductors as Karajan, Abbado, Rostropovich, Muti and Chailly. In the recording studio he famously collaborated with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic in Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello (with Anne-Sophie Mutter), and Strauss’ Don Quixote. Playing a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaumme cello from Paris c.1840, Antonio’s renditions of Bach’s seminal works are marked by purity and grace, introspection and sophistication.

This recording has a huge advantage over most of its rivals for the attention of Tallis listeners: the wonderful acoustics of Winchester Cathedral. In this magnificent space, the soaring lines and resplendent harmonies of Tallis's greatest masterpieces find sympathetic resonance, resulting in a heightened dramatic presence that takes the music beyond earthly confines. Of course, beyond the exceptional quality of the writing, credit must go to the phenomenal men and boys of Winchester Cathedral Choir. Where, even in England, does one find trebles who sing with more assuredness, musicality, and beauty of tone? With a repertoire including "In ieiunio et fletu," "Salvator mundi," "In manus tuas," "The Lamentations of Jeremiah," "O nata lux," and the unbelievable 40-part motet "Spem in alium," this is the Tallis disc to own if you're buying only one.

Rosanne Philippens is considered one of the greatest violinists in the Netherlands. Her open and communicative style of performance won her first prizes at competitions including the Dutch National Violin Competition (Amsterdam Concertgebouw 2009) and the Freiburg International Violin Competition (2014). Rosanne has the honour to play on the Barrere Stradivarius (1727) from the Elise Mathilde Foundation, the violin that Janine Jansen used to play for the past fifteen years. "Rosanne Philippens’s brilliantly focused, expressive sound is coupled with an inspired programme of music by and for virtuoso violinists of the Romantic period. An absolute joy from start to finish." (BBC Music Magazine, 5 stars)
