After countless solo guitar albums for Pablo, Joe Pass performed this welcome change of pace, a set of Brazilian tunes. Joined by fellow guitarist Oscar Castro Neves, bassist Octavio Bailly, drummer Claudio Slon, percussionist Paulinho da Costa and keyboardist Don Grusin, Pass plays warm solos on a variety of Brazilian tunes. Highlights include three songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim (including "Corcovado" and "Wave"), Deodato's "Tears," and Luiz Bonfa's "The Gentle Rain." A melodic and infectious date that has been reissued on CD.

The awarded Quarteto Em Cy is the most important female vocal quartet currently in Brazil. The group, originally formed by four sisters, began its career around 1963 and was discovered by the fundamental poet Vinícius de Moraes. With several changes in its formation throughout the years, this release was recorded with the latest, formed by the three original members Cyva, Cybele, and Cynara, together with Soninha. It's a tardy tribute to Vinícius, entirely dedicated to his songs. The group's excellent vocal performances are enhanced by welcomed special appearances: Vinícius himself, Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Toquinho, and Célia Vaz. The vocal arrangements were signed by an expressive team: Luiz Eça, Oscar Castro-Neves, Célia Vaz, Luiz Cláudio Ramos, and Cynara.

Bossa Nova translated as the "new beat" or "the new style", grew out of Rio De Janeiro in 1958. The instigators were a handful of artists with a desire to break from tradition, developing the samba rhythms with the influence of cool American jazz to find a music with such a warm soul and natural rhythm that no-one can help but tap and sway to its beat. Bossa Nova is palm trees swaying, it is like melting sugar in hot coffee, it is the setting sun and warm sand underfoot. It is the sound and beat of Brazil, it is one of the world's coolest musical styles and it remains to this day one of the world's great musical treasures.

In contrast to most actor/actresses-turned-vocalists, there's nothing to joke about on this album-no Golden Throats candidates, except maybe the title track. For starters, Shepherd has a solid jazz ensemble backing her up, led by Stan Getz and arranged by Oscar Neves, and gives us a very enjoyable jazz-flavored record. She takes the Fred Astaire approach to singing, not denying that she has a limited range but working carefully within that range and even using those limitations to her advantage. Getz's solos perfectly compliment Shepherd's voice, and she stretches out ravishingly on "This Masquerade," "I'm Old Fashioned" is a sexy torch number in her hands, without a trace of campiness, "Speak Low" soars subtly and elegantly, and the opening number, Ginastera's "Triste," is a sophisticated piece of concert music and a triumph for her as well. Peculiarly enough, the title track doesn't hold up as well as the rest, the weakness in her voice coming through at various points in its length, and is the only second-rate number here, although it is fun. Frank Rosolino (trombone), Terry Trotter (piano), and Monty Budwig (upright bass) make up the rest of the core of the band.

"O Som Brasileiro De Sarah Vaughan" (1978) is a fascinating album by the legendary American jazz vocalist Sarah Vaughan, which showcases her exploration of Brazilian music. The album was recorded during a time when Brazilian music, especially bossa nova and samba, was gaining international popularity, and Vaughan's take on this genre brought a fresh perspective to her already expansive vocal range.

Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz's neo-big band album Apasionado has been consigned to minor league status since its original release in 1990. It does, indeed, look unpromising: recorded in fall 1989, when Getz was undergoing treatment for the cancer which would kill him less than two years later; with a pair of synthesizers replicating a string section; and with the commercially astute but MOR focused Herb Alpert producing. But 20 years on and rereleased, Apasionado rises way above expectations. Getz is in soaring form, commanding attention so completely that the ersatz strings, and Alpert's slight arrangements, become irrelevant, barely emerging from the distant background where they belong. Apasionado, despite the received wisdom, is actually a very fine Getz album. The album's structure was modeled, in large part, on Getz's masterpiece Focus (Verve, 1961), on which the saxophonist improvised, with practically no rehearsal and without prewritten melodies, over a suite played by a string orchestra arranged by Eddie Sauter.
