Award-winning electro-pop duo from Australia, containing members of the Sleepy Jackson and Pnau.
Best known for their hit single "Walking on a Dream," Australia's larger-than-life electro-glam-pop duo Empire of the Sun feature the Sleepy Jackson's Luke Steele and Pnau's Nick Littlemore. Steele had previously worked with Pnau on "With You Forever," a track from the band's 2007 self-titled third album, and the pair enjoyed collaborating so much that they started their own project, drawing inspiration from the likes of Phoenix and Daft Punk. In fall 2008, Empire of the Sun released their debut album, Walking on a Dream, which the musicians described as "a spiritual road movie." Featuring songs co-written by Pnau's other half, Peter Mayes, the album went platinum in Australia and the title track became a hit single across the globe…

The Other Side Of The 80s is a 2CD compilation released by Rhino Records in 2016 to explore other hit songs by well known 80's artists, songs that may be well known but not by the mainstream. This includes alleged non-hits like "Things Can Only Get Better", "Talk Talk", "Some Like It Hot", "Election Day" and "The Look", all of which are well known but corporate radio has dramatically made people assume these songs are failures.

Here's a second volume of Sun Ra paying tribute to one of his favorite musical geniuses. And here's roughly the same annotation adapted from volume one, revised where appropriate.
Despite the fact that Sun Ra has over 1,000 titles copyrighted in his name, a good part of his concert and recorded repertoire consisted of works by other composers. He arranged—in his idiosyncratic way— tunes by Monk, Gershwin, Henderson (Fletcher and Horace), Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and countless others. But no one breezed into Sun Ra set lists more often than the "Duke"—Edward Kennedy Ellington.

Just three weeks after the U.S. release of the Beatles' swan song, Abbey Road, Creed Taylor ushered George Benson into the studio to begin a remarkably successful pop-jazz translation of the record (complete with a parody of the famous cover, showing Benson with guitar crossing an Eastern urban street). It is a lyrical album, with a hint of the mystery and a lot of the cohesive concept of the Beatles' original despite the scrambled order of the tunes.

As the second long-player by the Grateful Dead, Anthem of the Sun (1968) pushed the limits of both the music as well as the medium. General dissatisfaction with their self-titled debut necessitated the search for a methodology to seamlessly juxtapose the more inspired segments of their live performances with the necessary conventions of a single LP. Since issuing their first album, the Dead welcomed lyricist Robert Hunter into the fold – freeing the performing members to focus on the execution and taking the music to the next level. Another addition was second percussionist Mickey Hart, whose methodical timekeeping would become a staple in the Dead's ability to stop on the proverbial rhythmic dime.

It is a lyrical album, with a hint of the mystery and a lot of the cohesive concept of the Beatles' original despite the scrambled order of the tunes. Benson is given some room to stretch out on guitar, sometimes in a bluesy groove, and there are more samples of his honeyed vocals than ever before (oddly, his voice would not be heard again by record-buyers until he signed with Warner Bros.). Don Sebesky's arrangements roam freely from baroque strings to a full-throated big band, and Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Fortune, and Hubert Laws get some worthy solo space…

Although The Space Age Is Here to Stay is technically a compilation, chances are good some of these tracks will be new to even the most serious Ra fans, as six of the 16 tracks are previously unreleased and those that have been released are largely from lesser-known albums. The tracks span from 1958 to 1985, with each decade represented by at least two tunes. The songs range from jazz standards to space declamations to pseudo-gospel call-and-response stompers, and feature not only Sun Ra but the great June Tyson, John Gilmore, and others. By and large, these tracks are on the obscure side and the songs that may be familiar are represented by different versions. "Enlightenment" gets a circus organ arrangement and vocals by Gilmore and Tyson.
