With this program Yorick-Alexander Abel honors the unsurpassed cello legend Pau Casals who as a Catalan is mainly known under his Spanish name Pablo Casals. When at 97 years old Casals died in Puerto Rico he had made the cello as a solo instrument more popular than anyone else and he had won worldwide respect and affection as UN ambassador for peace. Pau Casals was the son of a Catalan father and a Puerto-Rican mother.

Rarely if ever have music festivals gathered together such a stellar array of names as those in Prades and Perpignan, thanks to the glory of Casal's name and the force of nature which was Alexander Schneider. This release of the Prades Festival is rarely heard and contains the most stunning performances of the 'Brandenburg Concertos', together with items from 'The Musical Offering'.

Casals was one of the very few conductors, and certainly the first, to record the complete Brandenburgs twice – in 1950 with his Prades Festival Orchestra (Columbia LPs) and in 1964-6 with the Marlboro Festival Orchestra (Sony CDs). Incidentally, don't be fooled by their names into assuming that these were amateur ensembles – both were extraordinary groups of top-flight professionals who would come together to study and play over the summer – the cello section of the Marlboro Festival Orchestra included Mischa Schneider (of the Budapest Quartet), Hermann Busch (Busch Quartet) and David Soyer (Guarneri Quartet). As recalled by Bernard Meillat, while Casals appreciated research into Baroque playing, he viewed Bach as timeless and universal, and insisted that an interpreter's intuition was far more important than strict observance of esthetic tradition.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello are among the best known and most difficult compositions in the musical repertoire. Miklós Perényi, one of the greatest cellists of his generation, and a world-famous exponent of his instrument, recorded these masterpieces for Hungaroton 40 years ago. Now after four decades we can once more hear his unforgettable performance of these key works.Born in Hungary, he began cello lessons at the age of five with Miklós Zsámboki, a student of David Popper. At the age of nine, he gave his first concert in Budapest and went on to study between 1960 and 1964 with Enrico Mainardi in Rome and, in Budapest, with Ede Banda. In 1963 he became a prizewinner at the International Pablo Casals Cello Competition in Budapest. Casals invited him to his master classes in Puerto Rico in 1965 and 1966, and he went on to become a frequent visitor to the Marlboro Festival. In 1974, Miklós Perényi joined the faculty at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, where he has held a professorship since 1980. He was honoured with the Kossuth-Prize in 1980 and the Bartók-Pásztory-Prize in 1987.

The title of this album explains the concept: Israeli-born cellist Amit Peled offers Bach's first three Suites for solo cello, BWV 1007-1009, played on the actual cello used by Pablo Casals for much of his career. It is a 1733 instrument by Matteo Gofriller, and it was given to Peled directly from the hands of Casals' first wife, Marta Casals Istomin. The instrument, it turns out, sounds gorgeous even if not in the hands of Casals himself. Peled, furthermore, was a student of American cellist Bernard Greenhouse, who was one of the few players to have worked with Casals on an extended basis.
