Pace

Among the protagonists of the recorder revival, Hans Ulrich Staeps deserves pride of place. This album allows a full appreciation of Staeps’ multifaceted talent as a composer, of his stylistic flexibility and of his capability to write beautiful music for players of all levels.

Oscar Brown's score for a hip play that he wrote (one of his many plays!) – performed by him, Sivuca, and Jean Pace. Despite the "show" quality of the material, this actually stands simply as a great Oscar Brown Jr. LP, and the production is nice and intimate, and sounds just like an ordinary studio album.

Leonidas Kavakos has established himself as a violinist and artist of rare quality, known at the highest level for his virtuosity, superb musicianship and the integrity of his playing. International recognition first came while Kavakos was still in his teens, winning the Sibelius Competition in 1985 and, three years later, the Paganini Competition.

In a new recording of music by Alessandro Scarlatti, Josetxu Obregón’s La Ritirata parades its dazzling vocal and instrumental talents in presenting the four cantatas which involve recorders and violins, together with an additional standalone soprano aria, for a further Glossa Neapolitan-flavored release. Drawn from his well over 800 secular cantatas these works combine fully-integrated, imaginative recitatives, expressive and dramatic arias and colorful and exacting instrumental sinfonias and ritornelli into elegant and compact wholes, and featuring poetic texts which typically followed the aspirations of the Accademia degli Arcadi literary circle initiated in Rome around the turn of the eighteenth century.

Maria Montessori, come educatrice, fu una voce critica contro la violenza del fascismo che imperversava in quell’epoca. Si impegnò sempre per il rispetto e l’attenzione verso il prossimo e i più piccoli, e fu candidata per tre volte – nel 1949, nel ’50 e nel ’51 – al premio Nobel per la pace. La sua non fu solo innovazione pedagogica: fu una “scoperta del bambino” che svelò anche il significato pratico, operativo e non ideologico delle parole libertà, lavoro, disciplina e pace. E di spirito di pace sono intessuti il suo pensiero e il suo metodo, a partire dai rapporti genitori-figli: una pace reale, vivibile, non un ideale astratto, che lei stessa sperimentava come relazione umana ed educativa concreta. In questa raccolta dei suoi scritti più intensi sul tema dell’educazione alla pace – presentata e commentata dai pedagogisti Daniele Novara e Elena Passerini – la “Dottoressa” ancora una volta ci viene in aiuto con il suo spirito anticonvenzionale per dar vita a un’umanità nuova e libera. Perché “l’educazione è l’arma della pace e la pace è la condizione della buona educazione”.
