Brzezinski's best work is undoubtedly his violin sonata - a work of searing expressiveness and emotional turbulence, especially in the central adagio which, towards the end, seems to paraphrase the lovely cantilena of Max Bruch's Adagio Appassionato op.57. The sonata by Brzezinski's contemporary and friend Józef Szulc (the Polish spelling of the German name 'Schultz') is his only known work in this or any genre. According to the booklet notes, it "lies on the border of light music and classical" (sic), but a rather sniffy view like this does not stand up well to scrutiny, even if the second half of the work does not quite replicate the poetic heights of the first.

My Story is a quest for those emotions in music that are close to my heart; the deepest ones that constitute the essence of one’s life. It is in them that our musical DNA is encoded, though its expression may change over time under the influence of various experiences.

"Myth and Romance" is an eclectic collection of works for violin and piano by Polish composers. Performed by violinist Marta Szlubowska and pianist Svetlana Belsky, most of the nine tracks are duets - two are solo piano and one is solo violin. The five composers whose music is included on the album are Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), Grazyna Bacewicz (1909-1969), Marta Ptaszynska (b. 1943), and Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941). Both artists are obviously masters of their respective instruments and began their collaboration in 2017 when they discovered their shared love for turn-of-the-20th-century repertoire.

Ignacy Jan Paderewski Paderewski's career had a Faustian cast. His demonically driven determination to become a concert pianist, his magical audience rapport, his rapture-rife music, his political career as Poland's first prime minister, and his subsequent efforts to rescue Poland from political quagmire wear a legendary aura more often encountered in poetry. Born to a well-off, cultivated family, young Paderewski received piano lessons from an early age, entering the Warsaw Music Institute before he was 12 to study piano, harmony, and counterpoint. Upon graduation in 1878 the Institute engaged him as a piano teacher.

Some of Stephen Hough’s most exquisite recordings come from his collaborations with EMI and Virgin Classics during this early period, offering a taste of the pianist’s impeccable touch, his musical and intellectual rigor, and his fondness for the short showpieces that filled late 19th-century salons and peppered the 78 rpm records of golden-age pianists. In the two all-Liszt recitals, Stephen Hough is also in his element, creating atmospheric colors, with notes flowing like streams of pearls, shaping and magnifying the dramatic depth of these works. From Mozart to Schumann, Brahms to Britten, looking back at the great virtuoso tradition while looking forward through his own arrangements, Stephen Hough presents, through these early recordings, a fascinating portrait of a young artist whose brilliant, artistic intellect and appetite for creativity remains unmatched today.
