Padre no Hay Más Que Uno

Very rare documentary, I got this directly from the director Carlos Ruiz. "Retrato" ("portrait" in english) is a very interesting and biographical film, in wich the director talks to both his parents about the troubled history of their family. The film goes way behond that has it questions deeper issues of spanish society. The director explores the language of the portrait in order to make one out of moving images, the whole film can be seen has one big portrait.

Cabría considerar Retrato como el reverso de Función de noche de Josefina Molina, pues si bien ambos filmes se presentan como el retrato íntimo de una generación criada en la posguerra española a través de la institución matrimonial, la condición humilde de los padres de Ruiz de Carmona no hace más que acentuar la estrechez de sus opciones vitales, limitadas aquí no sólo por un matrimonio para toda la vida, sino también por ese “trabajar, trabajar, trabajar” que, como una letanía, irrumpe continuamente en el relato de la madre del director.

Joaquin Diaz Gonzalez (Zamora, 1947) is a Spanish musician and folklorist. Although born in Zamora, the four years he moved to Valladolid, where he studied media and academics. In the mid 60's became involved in the study and dissemination of traditional culture, especially the community of Castile and Leon, offering concerts and lectures at universities in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Holland and USA.

He has also dedicated several works to the repertoire of Judeo-Spanish. Has promoted traditional Spanish music on radio and television in Europe, Asia and America. In 1976 he left the live performances to focus exclusively on research and promotion of popular culture. Throughout his long career, he has published some fifty books on various aspects of oral tradition: tales, romances and songs, popular expressions, etc.., And over two hundred articles and essays in various publications. He has recorded some sixty albums and participated in the creation of so many, working with numerous performers and popular music groups.

In Daniel Burman's Family Law, Perelman Jr., like his father before him, is an attorney. But rather than live in his father's shadow, Perelman Jr. chooses to work as a teacher in a law school. His life is good, if somewhat dull. Things change for the better when he pursues a beautiful former student, a pilates instructor named Sandra, and they have a son together. When his office is unexpectedly closed for several weeks, he doesn't tell Sandra, instead making visits to his son at school and his father at work. As his father begins to reach out to him with subtle urgency, he's forced to question his roles as father, son, and husband, and to contemplate what lies ahead.
