Lennie Tristano created an alternative to bebop, which posed severe demands on ensemble precision, intellectual rigor and instrumental virtuosity. He led the first combo that improvised simultaneously without any preconceived limits of key and duration, introducing "Free Jazz", long before the experiments of Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor reached us.

Members of Xenakis Ensemble conducted by Peter Eõtvõs

It's true that Xenakis' music has a completely unique, totally new expressiveness. It is essentially music that no longer concentrates so heavily on the individual aspect of the masses - in other words, it is truly 20th-century music. In contrast to many of his avant-garde colleagues who, according to Xenakis are still living in the 19th century, Xenakis is an authentic contemporary figure.

Label: Dark Skies Association | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 49:02 min | 117 mb
Synthpop

A sweeping, cinematic, emotional change is in the air. Molly Nilsson's sixth studio album Zenith begins with clear, wide eyes open to Earth as we would love it to be but seldom is. Recorded in her home of Berlin and whilst touring and, as ever, conceived, produced, written and recorded in solitude, Zenith is Nilsson's big statement and consequently her most affecting work to date. It sees her reveling in big arrangements, sweeping synth strings, bigger choruses and emotions. Like the rest of us she looks within and to endless sunsets in wonder and puzzlement. Over the 13 tracks here we get the impression that Nilsson may always be restless; like anyone else she has conflicting feelings of love and hate. It's just not many other people can tell you exactly how you feel before you know it yourself.

Michael Wollny is a musical adventurer, someone who always seeks out new sounds and sends his audience on exciting journeys of sonic discovery. Consequently, the critical response to his music has been appropriately enthusiastic. In 2009 he won both the jury and the audience prizes of the prestigious inaugural BMW Jazz Award in Munich, with his trio [em]. The industry’s critics have also been raving about his music for years, whether solo or performing with other musicians. The French publication Jazz Magazine described Wollny as, “the spearhead of a new generation of European jazz musicians”; Fono Forum described his “magical sounds”, and Jazzthing magazine wrote: “Piano music which has probably never been heard before in this form.” It is as if the critics all already knew Wollny’s lastest CD, Wunderkammer. Together with harpsichordist Tamar Halperin, and producer Guy Sternberg, Wollny again searches for that which hasn’t been heard before. This CD is a sound trip into the wonderful worlds which are created when all the historic and modern keyboard instruments of an entire museum are combined.
