Here's another in a long line of chronological Reinhardt discs on the Classics label. This time up, more from the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, featuring Reinhardt cohort and violinist Stephane Grappelli, guitarist Roger Chaput, and bassist Louis Vola. Having already cut many sides for the Ultraphone and HMV labels, Reinhardt and company were now recording for Decca; most of these performances were taped in London. Highlights include such Reinhardt and Grappelli staples as "Daphné," "Souvenirs," and "Paris Swing," not to mention fine renditions of "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Sweet Georgia Brown." There are also cuts spotlighting French harmonica great Larry Adler and trumpeter Philippe Brun.

Beat music, British beat, or Merseybeat (after bands from Liverpool and nearby areas beside the River Mersey) is a pop and rock music genre that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. Beat music is a fusion of rock and roll (mainly Chuck Berry guitar style and the midtempo beat of artists like Buddy Holly), doo-wop, skiffle and R&B. The genre provided many of the bands responsible for the British Invasion of the American pop charts starting in 1964, and provided the model for many important developments in pop and rock music, including the format of the rock group around lead, rhythm and bass guitars with drums. The Beat Of The Pops - excellent selection of beat tracks.

Coleman Hawkins - Greatest Hits (1996)
Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 52 min | 121 MB
Label: RCA Victor | Rel: 1996

Greatest Hits contains a good cross-section of Coleman Hawkins' best-known RCA numbers, including "Body And Soul", "April in Paris," "My Blue Heaven," "I've Got the World On A String," and "Sweet Lorraine." Although it doesn't offer anything of interest to jazz purists or completists, Greatest Hits is a nice sampler for newcomers and casual fans.

This 10 CD set offers an exciting overview of some of the most important recordings made by American jazz stars in Paris in the Fifties. They are milestones of Modern Jazz, Bebop and Hard Bop recorded by some of the most important players of the time, including Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Lionel Hampton, Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, Mary Lou Williams, Lester Young and Donald Byrd. Treated like second class citizens at home, many American jazz stars not only got more recognition and respect in the French capital, but found much better playing conditions as well. From concert-halls like "L'Olympia" to the clubs of the "Latin Quarter" they were appreciated and celebrated, and their music met with a glowing enthusiasm.

This budget five-disc box collects Reinhardt's first 124 recordings between 1934-1939. Curiously enough, despite the title, these sides aren't chronological, a fact that engineer Ted Kendall admits in the liner notes. Rather, while each disc's featured sessions are presented mostly chronologically, the discs themselves are rather awkwardly sequenced, with different discs covering different years in a seemingly random order. ~ AllMusic

Coleman Hawkins - Planet Jazz (1997) is an album that stands as both a testament to the enduring legacy of the saxophone giant Coleman Hawkins and a celebration of his pivotal role in shaping the evolution of jazz. Released posthumously in 1997, this album is a compilation that assembles recordings from various periods of Hawkins' long and influential career. Known as the "Father of the Tenor Saxophone," Hawkins revolutionized the instrument and became a trailblazer in jazz, particularly during the swing era.

Each box contains 25 slipcase CDs, a booklet (up to 186 pages) and an index. The booklets contain extensive notes (Eng/Fr) with recording dates and line-ups. 31 hours of music in each box, totalling 1677 tracks Each track has been restored and mastered from original sources. The only reason I can think of for there not yet being a review of these four boxed sets, is that those who own them are just too busy having one hell of a blast listening to them. Some people moan about the 50 year copyright law for audio recordings in Europe, but without it this highly entertaining, eye-opening and educational undertaking could never have taken place. These 100 discs (spread over four boxed sets of 25 discs) tell the story of jazz from 1898 to 1959.
