An Anthology The Elektra Years is a double-disc, 33-song set that offers a comprehensive overview of Paul Butterfield's eight years with the label. His first two albums, Paul Butterfield Blues Band and East-West, were seminal, groundbreaking records that blurred the boundaries between blues, jazz and rock, suggesting everything from blues-rock to psychedelia. They were stunning achievements which proved difficult to match, but Butterfield's remaining albums for the label all had a few good cuts. An Anthology does a nice job of rounding up those highlights, picking the best moments from uneven records; consequently, it's quite a valuable package for listeners who simply want a sampling from those later albums instead of purchasing them individually. Butterfield's first two albums remain necessary listens in their own right, but this set offers an excellent summary of his entire stint with Elektra.

This is a collection of the five first albums of the Paul Butterfield' group. The first two albums are classic and influenced rock music. The first album gives an electric atmosphere to blues, and was one of the influences to Bob Dylan's music to became electric. They are bringing also a clear message to white musicians covering blues songs, do it yourself, play your blues music. The second album is another classic going deep to psychedelia and having real treasures as songs. After these two albums the style has changed and the quality never equalized this of their previous work. This collection is not re-mastered. ~Amazon

The Elektra Years is a 2 cd anthology which features some of the best blues music from the early to late sixites bar none. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band played with Bob Dylan at his first electric performance at Newport in 1965 and at Woodstock in 1969. The band was formed in Chicago by avid blues aficionados Paul Butterfield on harmonica, Elvin Bishop on guitar and the former Howlin' Wolf rhythm section of Jerome Arnold and Sam Lay on bass and drums respectively. Butterfield and Bishop spent most of their time in Chicago bars listening to the blues masters perform live.

Long before Blues Traveller, there was this band called The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, led by the vocal & harmonica talents of Paul Butterfield. Many aspiring blues and rock musicians passed through Butterfield's band throughout the 1960's & 1970's and went on to greater fame, Mike Bloomfield being one of the most famous. Here on this 1978 concert DVD, recorded for the Rockpalast German TV show in Essen at the Grugahalle, Butterfield and his 'non' blues band rip it up on an all too short 45 minute set that incorporates blues and funk into a hard rockin' set of covers and originals.
