In 2001 alone, the UN deployed47,000 personnel in support of 15 peacekeeping missions (UNDPI, 2001a), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has continued to devote significant resources to peacekeeping operations, including 21,000 troops to Bosnia-Herzegovina (NATO On-line Library, 2000) and 38,000 troops to Kosovo (Piatt, 2002).
