Oggi sono più vicina di quanto lo sia mai stata al mio obiettivo: diventare una giornalista d'inchiesta. Basta con i soliti trafiletti sul meteo o sull'importanza di lavarsi le mani, questa è la mia grande occasione per dimostrare che non sono più la ragazza imbranata e pasticciona di sempre. Ho ottenuto il mio primo, vero incarico per un super articolo sulla corruzione nelle grandi aziende. Per farlo, devo infiltrarmi come una moderna James Bond alla Galleon Enterprises. Per ottenere il posto da stagista c'è da superare il colloquio con un certo Bruce Chamberson, così potrò indagare su un presunto giro di corruzione. Mi sento davvero concentrata, non mi posso permettere di fare errori. Ma perché mi tremano le gambe adesso che l'uomo più bello che abbia mai visto è entrato nella sala d'attesa e mi sta guardando in cagnesco mentre faccio colazione? Ogni capo ha le sue regole e apparentemente Bruce non sopporta che qualcuno tocchi la sua frutta..

Come ho conosciuto William? È entrato nella mia pasticceria, ha comprato una torta di ciliegie, rubato un vaso di fiori - non avevo idea di cosa diamine dovesse farci - e lasciato il suo biglietto da visita in bella mostra. Prima di ammettere cosa abbia fatto con il biglietto da visita vorrei chiarire una cosa: William non avrebbe potuto scegliere un momento peggiore per entrare nella mia vita. Il mio locale stava per fallire. Quello stupido del mio ex si rifiutava di lasciarmi in pace. E tutti mi tormentavano perché a venticinque anni non ero ancora mai andata a letto con un ragazzo. William non era certo il candidato ideale per la mia prima volta. Un donnaiolo convinto, sexy in modo insopportabile. Tutto il contrario di quello di cui avevo bisogno. E allora perché l'ho cercato? Ho capito di essere nei guai quando con la sua voce profonda mi ha detto: «La tua torta era deliziosa. Cucini anche a domicilio?».

Di solito non mi piacciono molto le persone. Preferisco i gatti. Ma il mio vicino non è come tutti gli altri. Vive nell'appartamento di fronte al mio, ed è il classico tipo abbottonato, con le scarpe costose, profumato come una pubblicità di Calvin Klein. Il classico tipo che ha tutto sotto controllo. È Mister Perfezione, e secondo me dovrebbe abbassarsi un attimo al livello dei comuni mortali. Ma poi qualcosa di suo è finito nella mia cassetta della posta. Lo so. Assurdo. È chiaramente una strategia per provarci con me. È stata la postina a mettercelo, ma so bene a che gioco sta giocando. Non mi farò certo fregare da uno così. Il problema è che quando il pacco si è aperto (ovviamente per errore) non ho avuto scelta: ho dovuto guardarci dentro. Il suo segreto sconcio mi ha fissato dritto in faccia. A quanto pare Mister Perfezione non è poi tanto perfetto. Chi l'avrebbe immaginato? Be', io. E ho intenzione di godermi ogni secondo di quello che succederà.

"Qualcuno potrebbe pensare che avere un capo tremendamente sexy sia già abbastanza difficile… Evidentemente non sanno cosa significa avere come datore di lavoro la propria prima cotta. Ryan è rimasto lo stesso sbruffone di sempre, ma questa volta devo trattenermi dall'istinto di saltargli addosso. E anche se mi fa impazzire, questa opportunità è preziosa. Fa tutto parte del piano: devo creare dei poster per una mega festa di Halloween e dopo potrò partire per Parigi inseguendo il mio sogno di diventare un'artista. Si tratta solo di resistere tre mesi, dopotutto. Ma Ryan è una di quelle tentazioni continue che non posso permettermi. Come una studentessa che, dopo un ottimo semestre, rischia una brutta insufficienza. E il fatto che possa essere proprio lui a darmela non fa che aumentare la tentazione… Ma ormai ho deciso: quando sarà il momento gli consegnerò i miei disegni e salterò sul primo aereo, per fuggire il più lontano possibile da qualunque fantasticheria su di lui".
