Bongo Rock is a 2006 compilation CD by The Incredible Bongo Band. Started by Michael Viner, his albums were nothing more than cover versions of well known songs along with a few original pieces, all complimented by someone playing mean bongo rhythms over it. Normally, it would be a weird part of thrift store ephemera but that was it. However, their cover of "Apache" would become a very important staple in the early movement of what we now know as hip-hop due to the drum break, which moved a lot of people in clubs and basketball courts to breakdance. Others discovered songs on their albums were just as funky. This was released by Mr. Bongo Recordings.

Funk, Rock, Soul

There's a fun story behind this album, retold in detail in the liner notes. In 1972, Michael Viner was an executive at MGM Records. Asked to put together some music for the soundtrack of an upcoming B-movie horror film, The Thing with Two Heads, he called on songwriter Perry Botkin, Jr., and the two of them whipped up a pair of songs called "Bongo Rock" and "Bongolia." By the middle of 1973, the songs, attributed to the Incredible Bongo Band, began to take off, both in Canada and on the U.S. R&B and pop charts, so Viner and Botkin took the concept to the next obvious level and cut an album, also titled Bongo Rock…

Along with the Kingston Trio, the Limeliters were one of the most successful folk groups of the early '60s, a time when the folk music revival was in itself a sort of backlash against the anti-establishment rock & roll generation. The original group consisted of Glenn Yarbrough, vocal and guitar; Lou Gottlieb, vocal and bass; and Alex Hassilev, vocal, guitar. The group was active from 1959 until 1965, when they disbanded.

There were numerous obscure attempts, most of them commercially and artistically unsuccessful, by folk revival veterans to move into folk-rock-pop in the last half of the 1960s. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her is Yarbrough's. Although Yarbrough's usual idea of a contemporary singer/songwriter to cover on record was limited to Rod McKuen, here he tackles many of the giants: Simon & Garfunkel (the title cut), Buffy Sainte-Marie ("Until It's Time for You to Go"), Ian & Sylvia ("The French Girl"), Bob Dylan ("Tomorrow Is a Long Time"), Phil Ochs ("Pleasures of the Harbor" and "Crucifixion"), and, most unexpectedly, Buffalo Springfield (with what must have been one of the very few covers of Stephen Stills' "Everybody's Wrong").
