Pete Townshend was the guitarist and primary songwriter for the Who from 1964 to 1982, also participating in the group's occasional reunions after its formal breakup. Best-known for his conceptual works, he wrote Tommy and Quadrophenia for the band, as well as the bulk of its other material.
Pete Townshend was heading toward collapse as the '70s turned into the '80s. He had battled a number of personal demons throughout the '70s, but he started spiraling downward after Keith Moon's death, questioning more than ever why he did what he did (and this is a songwriter who always asked questions). Signs of that crept out on Face Dances, but he saved a full-blown exploration of his psyche for Empty Glass, his first solo album since Who Came First, a vanity project released to little notice around Who's Next..

Mojo Magazine is a great newspaper, but the compulsion to repeat certain genuflections sometimes tends to get on the nerves, especially when it comes to Who (number 261 of August 2015), but which shines with quintessential Britishness. However, the umpteenth cover for the performers of the song referred to in the title brings with it this CD which, subtitled '15 Tracks Of '60s Beat-Filled Teenage Mod Angst' lines up a handful of groups (almost) never rose to fame, but who well represent the spirit of their times in a sort of minor Nuggets: all English, with one exception, give life to a fluctuating program in quality, but overall very entertaining to listen to. Given the period, the common denominators are still blues and rhythm 'n' blues, albeit reworked from different points of view, as the initial Don't Bring Me Down of the only big name on the bill, namely the Pretty Things, immediately makes clear. Even closer to overseas models is Bo Street Runner, an eponymous song for a group in which a young Mick Fleetwood was a member, then we move towards sounds with a greater dose of pop starting from the revival of It's Not True by the New Zealanders Larry's Rebels.

Billie Holiday is predominant among jazz singers. Frank Sinatra said of her, "She was and remains my biggest influence." Sinatra points to the way Holiday could make a song her own. Her dusky, smoky voice conveys more about love and heartache in one syllable than most other singers in any genre will convey in a lifetime. This album is a collection of recordings from the '50s for the Verve and Clef labels. It's a late-night dream for the nights you can't sleep, thinkin' about the love that got away. Holiday is accompanied by some of the music's best players: Ben Webster (king of the big, breathy tenor sax tone), Benny Carter (alto sax), and Jimmy Rowles (one of the most graceful pianists ever). Her take on "Body and Soul" could melt the hardest heart, and imagine yourself at the end of your figurative rope with "Ill Wind"…

The seeds for the La De Das THE HAPPY PRINCE were sown very early on in 1967, long before Pete Townsend's TOMMY and Ray Davies' ARTHUR were even conceived, unfortunately it would be two years before it was finally released.Band members Bruce Howard and Trevor Wilson were talking of a rock opera as early as 1966 and started writing material early in 1967. The project was temporarily put on hold while the band left New Zealand in May '67 to hopefully conquer the Aussie scene. The La De Das eventually talked EMI Australia into recording THE HAPPY PRINCE album in January 1969. Finally released in April 1969 to unanimously excellent reviews, it was only a moderate seller at the time. This album is comprised of two versions of THE HAPPY PRINCE - one version is without Adrian Rawlins' narration in an attempt to show how the album might have sounded as a collection of songs.

Gef Lucena writes of this new release featuring a compilation of Irish and British dance music curated from previous Saydisc albums and the catalog of Peter Kennedy: “It will probably be a brave or dedicated listener who plays all of these tracks at one sitting. However, drawing on our extensive archives of this genre we have arranged the dances with the greatest variety of instrumentation, provenance and periods of history. Many of the tracks are from Peter Kennedy’s renowned mono recordings from the 1950s and 60s with the remainder from Saydisc’s own stereo and digital recordings over the decades. Dip into this exhilarating selection or go for the long haul, but, however you listen, we hope that you enjoy the rich heritage of sound from the British and Irish traditions.”

The Prestige label is a byword in jazz circles, founded in 1948 by Bob Weinstock he launched a series of subsidiary labels buoyed by its unprecedented success. One of the more successful of those sister labels was Bluesville, which proceeded to release some truly legendary blues artists in the shape of Lightnin' Hopkins, Victoria Spivey and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Sometimes in acoustic settings and in others with full accompaniment the labels' roster shone brightly no matter how they were presented, so enjoy the blues men and women of Bluesville doing what came naturally.
