Lucky Thompson (1924-2005) had never been accorded the praise he deserved in the United States, despite the fact that in the 40s many prominent critics and musicians considered him the finest tenor-saxophone player to appear in jazz since the emergence of Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young.

At this point in time, the Stan Kenton Orchestra (which had really become a college stage band) was searching for new material, and not having much luck finding quality items. The ensemble (whose best-known sidemen were altoist/flutist Mary Fettig, trombonist Dick Shearer and drummer Peter Erskine) performs on this 1991 CD reissue such weak songs as "Live and Let Die," "2002-Zarathustrevisited," the "Love Theme from 'The Godfather'" and a version of "It's Not Easy Bein' Green" which includes a glee club-type group vocal.
