Magdalena Kozena, one of the most acclaimed recitalists of today, presents a personal collection of songs she has known since childhood and that form some of her earliest musical influences. A haunting collection of songs by Czech composers such as Dvorak, Janacek, Martinu, Schulhoff and Eben, all deeply rooted in the rich Czech folk song tradition. Like Magdalena explains about the songs on the album: They are just the sort a mother would sing to her baby. My mother is not a professional singer, but she loved to sing and knew a lot of songs!

It would very much seem that the 19th- and 20th-century Czech piano concerto repertoire begins and ends with Dvořák and Martinů. The present recording, however, serves to prove that this is far from being the case. It contains three piano concertos that have been – undeservedly – overlooked. Vítězslava Kaprálová wrote the Piano Concerto in D minor, characterised by brilliant instrumentation and an engrossing solo part, at the age of 20 as her graduation work.

The Orchestr Gustava Broma is a distinguished big band whose documented activity dates back to 1940. As a European ensemble their path to success wasn't always smooth, but they came to be recognized as a top calibre ensemble and have been compared with the bands of Maynard Ferguson and Dizzy Gillespie. Originally released in 1977, "Polymelomodus" is a cornerstone of the Brom orchestra and appears here stunningly remastered.
