Beyond the Darkness is an anthology of the second half of the career of the Italian band Goblin, best known for its propulsive scores for Italian film director Dario Argento.
Combining elements of progressive psychedelia with jazz-rock, Eastern European folk music and the Baroque, Goblin’s music remains an eerie one-off.
It is a well-established fact that our approach to music is generally twofold: this is the physicists' as well as the musicians' doing. One the one hand, music is considered to be based on acoustics, or even mathematics, which ought to give it the status of a science; on the other hand , it is acknowledged that it proceeds from psychological and sociological phenomena which, over the ages, have developed into an art, itself depending on various crafts. There is no longer any contradiction between the two approaches so long as one is prepared to accept them jointly, with enough insight to respect the methods proper to each end of the "chain."
For a long time I had had the idea of using a large-scale work to put into concrete form a concept that seemed to me to symbolize the apparatus of sensory perception in music. The concept permits two types of attitude as its extremes: immediate perception, linked to the nature of phenomena at the moment they occur, and reflective perception, which takes the relationships between phenomena into consideration, and causes memory to intervene. In symmetry with the latter type we have foreseeability. That is, the unconscious will to anticipate the musical discourse, with this will feeding on memorized objects…
