After having his mainstream breakthrough with the Wes Craven slasher film Scream in 1996, American composer Marco Beltrami became closely associated with his stirring, percussive orchestral scores for horror, action, and science fiction movies, including further collaborations with Craven. His first of multiple Academy Award nominations came with the 2007 remake of the western 3:10 to Yuma. Fifteen years after the first installment, 2011's Scream 4 was his fourth straight score for the series. In 2015, Beltrami collaborated with Philip Glass on music for the Marvel Comics film Fantastic Four, and in 2018, his score was one of the few things that could be heard in the hit horror movie A Quiet Place.

From 2008 to 2010, HBO’s award-winning “In Treatment” was one of the most acclaimed dramas on television, launching the careers of Mia Wasikowska, Allison Pill, and Dane DeHaan, among others. Based on the Israeli show “BeTipul,” the show unfolded in real-time through revealing half-hour sessions between patient and therapist, played by Gabriel Byrne. A decade after the show went off the air, HBO unexpectedly announced it would belatedly return in 2021 with a new doctor and new patients.

Here, he and his regular collaborators, Johnny Klimer and Reinhold Heil (both boasting experience with… Nina Hagen!) have come up with a symphonic score performed by none other than Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker, with Absolute Ensemble founder Kristian Jarvi conducting the State Choir Latvia.

The pop-minimalist music of Max Richter has been gaining followers beyond his native Germany and his residence of Britain thanks to some highly successful soundtracks and energetic promotion by the Deutsche Grammophon label, which recorded Exiles in 2019 and released it in 2021. Here, he is interpreted by the Baltic Sea Philharmonic and its conductor, Kristjan Järvi. Richter selected the group himself, and it was a good choice. The Baltic musicians have plenty of experience with the glassy, precise textures of minimalism, and they deliver accomplished readings. Exiles comprises 18 short sections with a simple pulse, slightly modifying – in classic minimalist fashion – a pattern laid out at the beginning.
