Capitol Theater, Port Chester, NY – April 22nd, 1970
Port Chester was the eighth show of Pink Floyd’s 1970 Spring US tour following two dates at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia and was their final show in the New York metropolitan area (they also played SUNY Stony Brook and the Fillmore East). This was also the longest US tour to date and it is fascinating to hear material from the recent Zabriskie Point and More soundtracks evolving into lengthy jams alongside familiar songs from Ummagumma as well as the transition into the Atom Heart Mother period. Despite the inclusion of some Barrett-era pieces, this is the sound of The Floyd spreading their wings and finding their own identity.

Very few Pink Floyd's shows have been recorded, especially dating from the 'golden age' of the Floyd (early 70's), when they invented a new style of rock.
This is one of the more celebrated recordings of The Pink Floyd filmed in KQED studios in San Francisco on the afternoon of April 29, 1970.

Pink Floyd were filmed in concert a number of times in the early 1970s, and as such footage goes, this was not the best performance nor the most dramatically shot. The show filmed at and broadcast by KQED public television in San Francisco in April 1970, for instance, had more compelling performances, and the more familiar scenes shot for the Live at Pompeii movie were certainly filmed with more cinematic flair. But if you're a serious Pink Floyd fan and want even more, this is certainly a satisfactory, professionally made, five-song, 50-minute concert film of an August 8, 1970 performance at the Saint Tropez Music Festival, originally done for broadcast on the French TV program Pop 2.

DYNAMIC AND INTENSE BROADCAST RECORDING FROM FLOYD’S THIRD US TOUR • Recorded on Pink Floyd's third American tour, this show introduced San Francisco to some of the newer material from the Ummagumma LPs, and a taste of things soon to come on Atom Heart Mother, to be released later that year. This San Francisco audience is particularly quiet and attentive, a fact that seems to have facilitated a more intimate, unique and focused performance than other dates on this tour. • This show begins in a quiet, pastoral manner and continues to build in intensity as the sets progress. Of particular note in the first set are "Cymbaline" and the unreleased "Embryo," as well as the entire suite of "Atom Heart Mother." • After the acoustic opener to the second set, "Green Is the Colour," the band takes off into the outer realms of musical exploration for the rest of the evening. The last three compositions, in particular, show the band in an adventurous mood with standout performances of tracks from their first two albums. Following the marathon, 22-plus minute encore of "Saucerful of Secrets," the audience brings them back for a rare second encore of "Interstellar Overdrive." • Earlier this same day, the band had taped a memorable live performance for KQED TV in San Francisco. This tour met with disaster a few weeks later when the band's equipment was stolen during a multi-night engagement at the Warehouse in New Orleans. The rest of the tour was cancelled. Fortunately for fans of Pink Floyd, however, this broadcast recording remains - an earnest, unique perspective of the band in a formative time of their career.
