Being the quintessential album rock band, Pink Floyd hasn't had much luck with "best-of" and "greatest-hits" compilations, like A Collection of Great Dance Songs and the bizarro follow-up, Works. Since both of those were released in the early '80s (and time travel being unavailable even to Pink Floyd), they obviously left out any tracks from the post-Roger Waters era albums. While countless hours in dorm rooms have been spent laboring over whether or not the post-Waters recordings should even be considered the "real Floyd," the later albums nonetheless stand as a further progression in the band's evolution and warrant recognition…

The 2001 release Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd does just that, sequencing the tracks non-chronologically in an effort to place more emphasis on the individual songs as opposed to the era they're from.

1995 album by the group Zodiac Blue. Intended by song writer Jess Halpern as a response to Pink Floyd's album Dark Side of the Moon, but with a positive slant to counter the original's somewhat depressed mood. The makeup of the album is very similar to Dark Side, in the way it keeps a central theme (enjoying life) running through all the songs, and using voiceovers and sound effects to help convey the meaning behind the songs. Also, the structure of the album is very similar - both albums open with a track of sound effects (Speak to me, Rise), then continue with a vocal track which is later reprised (Breathe, Dream), and also feature a song about money in the middle (Money, Credit).

Dwell Records specializes in the nexus point where grunge, noise, psychedelia, and, most importantly, metal meet. Fitting then that they would release this tribute comp to Syd Barrett, the madcap wonder boy who in the late '60s had a hand in inspiring all those genres. The collection features artists who run the metal gamut. Stoner legends Pentagram deliver a dynamic "Flaming" while trance-metallers Jesu drive "Chapter 24" deeper into the cosmos than Pink Floyd ever did. Prog-metal kings Yakuza tackle "Lucifer Sam" while noisy underground dwellers Stinking Lizavetta lay a guitar-heavy "Matilda Mother." Some versions are better than others, but taken as a whole LIKE BLACK HOLES IN THE SKY proves the modern reach of Barrett's vision and the breadth of his songwriting.

The Ashqelon Quilt are a young Israeli trio who seem to have absorbed the best of late 60's and early 70's progressive elements. Their material ranges from English, Celtic and Middle Eastern folk to the Beatles, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd and early Genesis (circa "Trespass"). The band consists of brothers Orj Hendel (guitars) and Shachar Hendel (keyboards, bass and MIDI programming), and Sharon Rinat (recorder); all three alternately share vocal duties. A number of guests also contributed some vocals, flute and violin on their 2001 release "The Event", including the Hendel brothers' own dad, Benny Hendel…

Echoes is a double-CD collection of some of Pink Floyd's best songs. It's also a fascinating document of the band's history. They began life as Syd Barrett's phantasmagoric plaything before clasping the wings of Icarus and ascending toward the sun on an epic space-rock odyssey, eventually turning left once they reached the dark side of the moon and burning up on reentry, crash-landing on every earthlings' home hi-fi. And it's all here–30 years of the Floyd's awesome back catalog trimmed down to two handsome CDs.

Rare Limited Vinyl Issue. Manufactured in EU as a 180 gram digitally remastered vinyl pressing. Brilliant greatest hits album in that it manages to sound like a mega concept album in the way that the music from different stages of the band's history and development are woven together so seamlessly like …as if in a dreamscape. The edits of Echoes and Shine on you Crazy Diamond as well as samplers of briefer lesser known compositions (that segue between the famous songs) are really well done.
