The blues have been imported into Poland by multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and festival producer Irek Dudek (born Ireneusz Dudek). His group, the Silesian Blues Band, featuring Apostolis "Lakis" Antymos, Josef Skrzek, and Jerzy Piotrowski, was one of Poland's top blues-rock bands of the 1970s. Although he's continued to record as a soloist, releasing No. 1 in 1985 and A New Vision of Blues in 1994, Dudek has made his most enduring mark as producer of the Rawa Blues Festival.

If the final installment of ABKCO's series of box sets containing CD replicas of the Rolling Stones' original singles for Decca and London during the '60s seems not quite as impressive as the first two, there's a reason for it: it's not. Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824) was an Italian violinist and composer, and one of the major figures in the advancement of modern violin performance. While he is remembered today for his 29 violin concertos, which proved to be his most original and enduring works, he was a celebrity in his day for his phenomenal playing. His intermittent career as a violinist took him from Versailles, where he joined the court of Marie Antoinette, to concerts in London. After failing at a wine business, Viotti turned to managing the Paris Opéra and taught several rising violinists, including Rodolphe Kreutzer

Those who collected CDs in the early years may remember Sony Classical's outstanding "Vivarte" series, which generally provided music using original instruments. Anner Bylsma one of the finest cellists of his time. Anner Bylsma celebrated his 70th birthday when this set was originallyl issued on 2004. It really mattered not what repertoire this cellist chose to play because his art is so all-embracing. He is gifted with a beautiful cello sound, formidable technique and wonderfully convincing interpretive ideas.

While this collection brings together all the standard tunes Mstislav Rostropovich recorded for EMI Classics, the "Russian" recordings are deservedly the headline grabbers. World premieres abound, from a searing account of Prokofiev's Cello Sonata with Sviatoslav Richter to an especially probing Shostakovich Second Cello Concerto, both given in the presence of the composers.

There's a certain part of the collectors market that has a fondness for box sets that recreate the original singles and EPs British Invasion bands released during the '60s. These, to put it mildly, are not designed for practical listening – very few listeners like to load up their multi-disc player with CDs running two tracks – but that's kind of the point of these boxes: they're archival releases, targeted at collectors who relish recreations of these singles and EPs, as exercises in both history and nostalgia. In other words, these are replicas of artifacts, not the genuine thing, but since these singles and EPs are hard to come by (and often too expensive for fans on a budget), this is the next best thing to the actual item…
