This massive 32-track collection clocks in at more than two and a half hours of some of the finest Southern rock ever committed to vinyl. It begins and ends with the cornerstones of the genre - Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. In addition, other Seventies stalwarts such as the Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, The Charlie Daniels Band and Molly Hatchet are represented with their most well known songs.

If you're a band covering a song, the goal should be to pay homage to the original while simultaneously making the song your own. Like a chef tinkering with a recipe, the idea is to make something familiar, but to freshen it up with new ingredients, new flavors that complement the dish while reinventing it.

Music from the television series "Miami Vice" starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas which ran on NBC from 1984-1989. The series was notable for its use of contemporary popular music, and for being one of the first shows regularly broadcast in stereo. By design, the show often resembled a music video rather than a standard Police Procedural. Extended musical sequences were common, often featuring little or no dialogue and numerous images of cars, boats, guns, nightlife, and scenery. The show was filmed on location in Miami, and made use of a distinctive color palette, mostly white and pastels.

In the early 90s, a number of bands exploring the daring side of guitar rock and pop started to emerge in the UK. Most were new, some included members of 80s groups looking for new directions. They were supported by established independent labels such as Rough Trade and 4AD/Guernica and new ventures like Too Pure or Domino. Influenced by the legacy of post-punk, minimalism, 70s art rock and a growing electronic scene, their first releases were enthusiastically received by the media. This included a 1994 article in The Wire where journalist Simon Reynolds used the term “post-rock” to refer to some of them: Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno, Moonshake, Seefeel, Main, Pram, Insides…

Vol. 3 in acclaimed instrumental series finds Duane Eddy and his guitar Moovin' 'N' Groovin' and the Phil Upchurch Combo steppin' to the dancefloor with their fantastic, double-sided single You Can't Sit Down (Parts 1 & 2) (incidentally, this has, for its time - 1961, a floor-shaking, rootsy bass-guitar solo that predicts the later stylings of bassists like Willie Weeks). Here are UK Pop chart hits Perfidia by The Ventures (#4), Wipe Out by The Surfaris (#5), (Ghost) Riders In The Sky by The Ramrods (#8), Pipeline by The Chantays (#16), Quite A Party by The Fireballs (#29) and the afore-mentioned You Can't Sit Down (#39). Lesser known items by The Teen Beats (The Slop Beat) and Buddy Lucas (I Want To Know) help present a more complete picture of these instrumental years from the late 1950s to early 1960s (but are also included because they are so damn good!). The detailed sleevenotes are by Stuart Colman.

As the auteur of post-punk suburban adolescence, director John Hughes appropriately enhanced his '80s movies with relatively harmless new wave soundtracks. Where earlier films like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles included the occasional Wang Chung or Simple Minds track, though, 1986's Pretty in Pink boasted a full lineup of "rock of the '80s" highlights.
