Present Laughter

No Secrets in the Family were a Swiss avant-prog band active during the late 1980's and early 1990's. They were heavily influenced by many of the RIO-related bands, in particular the more song-orientated groups like Art Bears, Slapp Happy, Etron Fou Leloublan and News From Babel. The result, as fans of these bands might expect, is playful, quirky art rock which balances discordant elements with melodic touches and places an emphasis on theatrical vocals and complex instrumental interplay. Though they never made a big impact at the time and remain obscure today, even by avant-prog standards, No Secrets in the Family should certainly not be overlooked. They are especially recommended for fans of the afore-mentioned artists, as well as avant-rock bands like Debile Menthol, Skeleton Crew and the Residents.

Three Day Week is the fourth compilation album curated by Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. This time they’re concentrating their efforts on 1972-1975 when Britain was a bloody miserable place to be (Apparently, I was a carefree baby). There were some lovely sounds though, and this eclectic mix exists to show you just that. Features tracks from Mungo Jerry, The Kinks, Hawkwind, The Strawbs, Adam Faith, David Essex, The Troggs and more.

Present From Nancy (1970). There are few bands who have managed to record such a strong, fully developed first album after only two years of existence. Supersister's debut effort remains one of Holland's best progressive rock albums and a classic of the genre worldwide, even though the group garnered only fringe interest outside of Europe. All the elements of the group's sound are already firmly in place: Sacha VanGeest's soothing flute lines, Robert Jan Stips' far-out keyboard sounds, and the group's wacky humor. The recipe has yet to reach its full, unique potential - one too easily detects specific influences, mostly that of Soft Machine (the fuzz bass in "Metamorphosis"), Caravan ("Memories Are New" and the multi-part, suite-like structure of some songs), and the Mothers of Invention…
