Probability Theory I

This book covers the method of metric distances and its application in probability theory and other fields. The method is fundamental in the study of limit theorems and generally in assessing the quality of approximations to a given probabilistic model. The method of metric distances is developed to study stability problems and reduces to the selection of an ideal or the most appropriate metric for the problem under consideration and a comparison of probability metrics.

Despite the fears of university mathematics departments, mathematics educat,ion is growing rather than declining. But the truth of the matter is that the increases are occurring outside departments of mathematics. Engineers, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, economists, statis- cians, biologists, and even philosophers teach and learn a great deal of mathematics. The teaching is not always terribly rigorous, but it tends to be better motivated and better adapted to the needs of students. In my own experience teaching students of biostatistics and mathematical bi- ogy, I attempt to convey both the beauty and utility of probability.

This is a somewhat extended and modified translation of the third edition of the text, first published in 1969. The Swedish edition has been used for many years at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and at the School of Engineering at Link6ping University. It is also used in elementary courses for students of mathematics and science. The book is not intended for students interested only in theory, nor is it suited for those seeking only statistical recipes. Indeed, it is designed to be intermediate between these extremes. I have given much thought to the question of dividing the space, in an appropriate way, between mathematical arguments and practical applications. Mathematical niceties have been left aside entirely, and many results are obtained by analogy.
