Hagai Shaham, Arnon Erez - Joseph Achron: Complete Suites for Violin & Piano (2012) 2CDs Music

Admired by Schoenberg (who described him as ‘one of the most underestimated of modern composers’), Joseph Achron was a boundary defying violinist-composer of extraordinary gifts. He drew on his Jewish faith to profound effect, from the early influence of his cantor father to his enthusiastic championing of the Society for Jewish Folk Music (which did for Jewish music what Bartók did for Eastern European folk culture). It’s hardly surprising that much of Achron’s music is for violin—he was a consummate player himself and a prolific recitalist. But what’s striking is how varied and exploratory his output is, delighting in experimentation, as the wonderfully named Suite bizarre demonstrates, just as much as the direct emotionalism of his transcriptions of Hebraic melodies. Who better to present this music than two artists steeped in similar traditions to Achron: Hagai Shaham and Arnon Erez.

Years before Trent Rezner-inspired horror music began to appear within the soundtracks of big-budget serial killer flicks, Skinny Puppy founder cEvin Key laid the frightening electronic groundwork that would influence Nine Inch Nails and a whole generation of industrial artists. Key, along with fellow Skinny Puppy member D.R. Goettel, formed the side project Doubting Thomas around 1990 in order to delve more specifically into instrumental "soundtracks for movies that never existed." With their first full-length release, The Infidel, Key and Goettel generously shuffle bleak film and television audio clips into their oppressive synth padding and industrial drum machinery to form their own audio storylines…

In 2016 the group traveled to Philadelphia to record their debut album Rittenhouse at Rittenhouse Soundworks, a studio run by close friend and fellow percussionist Jim Hamilton. There they were joined by two world-class woodwind specialists: Carlos Malta, one of the world's most influential Brazilian musicians and Chris Bullock, member of the powerhouse group Snarky Puppy. The album was conceived as an audiovisual project, with equal weight given to the sonic and visual aspects of the work.
