Saxophonist/master musician, singer, songwriter and producer Ronnie Laws first began making an impact as a soloist with the 1975 release of his Blue Note album, “Pressure Sensitive.” By the start of the ‘80s, the Houston-born member of the musically prolific Laws family was topping the U.S. jazz album charts and building a solid audience among R&B fans on both sides of the Atlantic. A U.S. Top 10 jazz and Top 30 R&B best-seller, Mr. Nice Guy focused on Ronnie’s vocals as much as it did his prowess as an instrumentalist: the album contained the Top 40 R&B hit, “In The Groove” (a favourite among UK rare groove lovers), the synth-driven title track and a hip cover of Jr. Walker’s “What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)”.

Few if any artists of the girl group era were as iconic as Ronnie Spector. As the lead singer of the Ronettes, Ronnie was the crown jewel of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound (and also his wife for a while). But as iconic sounds of the '60s go, Ronnie and her peers had to play second fiddle to the Beatles and the many other British groups who invaded America in their wake. As it happens, Ronnie was a fan of the British Invasion bands just like the rest of us. What's more, she shared stages with the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, and the Kinks when the Ronettes toured the U.K. back in the day. So it makes sense that Ronnie would look back at this era by recording an album of classic tunes by great British acts of the '60s.

To get an idea of exactly how many Ronnie Milsap collections are on the market, just turn to the back page of the booklet for RCA/Legacy's 2006 double-disc set The Essential Ronnie Milsap, where it lists other Ronnie albums you might also enjoy. There are ten listed, all but one of them a compilation (that would be his very, very good 2006 comeback, My Life). Which begs the natural question, is The Essential Ronnie Milsap needed? Especially since there is already another compilation called The Essential Ronnie Milsap (dating from 1995), and there already was an excellent double-disc set called 40 #1 Hits released six years earlier? The answer is, yes it is, particularly since 40 #1 Hits has fallen out of print. Of course, it also helps that Essential is an expertly chosen and sequenced collection of Milsap's best work, from 1973's "(All Together Now) Let's Fall Apart" and running all the way to 1989's "A Woman in Love."
