Derived from the viole da braccio family rather than that of the viols, the cello gained its independence in the Cremona cradle of Italian instrument making between the 16th and early 18th century. It adopted the shape of a large violin – so large that it cannot rest on the shoulder like a violin or viola and is therefore held between the legs; an adjustable pin planted in the ground was added from the middle of the 19th century to make it more stable and easier to hold.

Only few cellists are as inspiring as Raphaela Gromes: her cello playing is virtuosic and vibrant, full of passion and technically brilliant, versatile and charming at the same time. She fascinates her audience as soloist as well as duo-partner or member of a wind-quartet, her performance being fantastically challenging and extraordinarily light-footed.

Wilhelm Taubert was a significant composer and teacher in Berlin during a period when the city began to rival Vienna and Paris as a European musical powerhouse. Though it was also a time when the piano had reached its zenith in size and tonal depth, Taubert’s graceful, conservative style was perfectly suited to the instrument. His sonatas fuse Beethovenian elements with those of Weber, and feature slow movements that draw on rich operatic lyricism reminiscent of Rossini or Cherubini.

Paul Tortelier, born in Paris in 1914, became very well known in Britain through his remarkable program for BBC Television in which he gave to his young students so many insights into the music and its performance in the form of a Master class. As a performer himself his natural flair communicated his enthusiasm and genius to all in the audience as well as his fellow musicians; it seemed as if the cello was a natural extension of his body and he invited, as it were, the instrument to dance with him. Whilst he had an enormous range of musical sympathies it was to the music of Bach that he always returned – no coincidence that he made two recordings of the six Suites, the first in 1960 in Paris and then nearly 22 years later in London. He said, in reply to a question about atonality, that music is like a locked box – in order to get inside it you need a key! His engaging personality and genuine love and interest in music endeared him to his many fans throughout the world and it his death at the age of only 76 was greeted with universal sadness. This 20-CD set is being released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death on July 18, 1990.

His vast repertoire ranges from pre-Bach to post-Berg; composers like Sciarrino, Donatoni, Piston, Piazzolla and Xenakis have written for him…
