For only the second time in her career, jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall deviates from her tried, true m.o. of covering easily identifiable jazz standards. On Glad Rag Doll she teams with producer T-Bone Burnett and his stable of studio aces. Here the two-time Grammy winner covers mostly vaudeville and jazz tunes written in the 1920s and '30s, some relatively obscure. Most of the music here is from her father's collection of 78-rpm records. Krall picked 35 tunes from that music library and gave sheet music to Burnett.

(3-CD set) Scott Joplin (c. 1867-1917) remains one of America's most important and original composers, renowned for his piano rags and ragtime waltzes. As the 'King of Ragtime Writers,' his mastery of the form is evident in such works as 'Maple Leaf Rag,' 'The Entertainer,' 'Gladiolus Rag,' 'Solace,' and many others that combine infectious rhythms with exquisite melodies. His piano works are at times overwhelmingly joyous and at times deeply poignant.

This three-disc compilation features many of the Mills Brothers' best tracks. Although Golden Greats does not cover the vocal group's whole career, it still competes well with the definitive Mills Brothers: The Anthology (1931-1968) and perhaps represents them better.

Malachi Thompson is impressive not only because of his talents as a composer and a soloist, but also because of his versatility. The Chicago trumpeter has no problem playing Blue Note-flavored hard bop/post-bop, but he's equally comfortable in avant-garde situations. Though Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, and Freddie Hubbard are strong influences on Thompson, he has also learned a lot from Lester Bowie. In fact, Bowie is a featured guest on Buddy Bolden's Rag. This superb CD finds Thompson celebrating the contributions of New Orleans cornetist Buddy Bolden, one of jazz's pioneers and a major influence on such greats as King Oliver and Louis Armstrong. It has been argued that Bolden single-handedly "invented" jazz in the 1890s, and while it's a stretch to say that he invented jazz all by himself, he most certainly played a crucial role in its development…

2007 release that includes late '60s recordings from these Blues legends, originally recorded for the UK-based Blues label Blue Horizon. Both Mississippi Joe Callicott and Furry Lewis' Blues careers began in the '20s but both were overshadowed by the bigger Blues artists in their later years. Thankfully, Blue Horizon came calling and both men were able to lay down splendid Blues recordings during the latter years of their lives. 29 tracks including 'John Henry', 'Casey Jones', 'Waiting For A Train' and more.

EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks, cue, log) - 184 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps - 88 MB

Marvin Hamlisch was extremely prolific in the 1970s scoring a number of films including Bananas, Kotch, The Spy Who Loved Me, and The Way We Were. He also won three Oscars in 1973 alone, as well four Grammys, and a Tony Award during that particular decade. Hamlisch's biggest success both commercially and critically was his soundtrack for the now-iconic film, The Sting. Most of the tunes here were originally written by famed ragtime composer Scott Joplin except "Little Girl," and Hamlisch's "The Glove," "Hooker's Hooker," and "Luther." The well-crafted, lyrical opener, "Solace[Orchestra Version]" easily captures the movie's 1930s setting and adds just a touch of melancholy and nostalgia.
