There was one irrepressible Chicago club act that refused to be replaced by any DJ's sound system. Maxx Traxx (and Third Rail before them) were a scene unto themselves in the early 80s, happening live on-stage five-plus nights a week somewhere in the 312. Their two LPs, both recorded in 1982, are a sheer energy ride almost too explosive to be captured by studio tape. And yet these two stone classics would remain unanswered by a city as it moved determinedly toward the motorik sound of house. Hop the turnstile and move with this complete document of Chicago's last great club band told in detailed text, newly revealed photos, and complete studio recordings painstakingly remastered. “Baba Commandant And The Mandingo Band return with their second album, Siri Ba Kele. After the Afro-beat fury of their first album Juguya (2015), the band has now distilled a potent mix of traditional and modern Burkinabe funk with a reverent take on the iconic Mandingue guitar music of the 1970's. Mamadou Sanou (Baba Commandant) leads the band with a confidence earned from years of toiling in the DIY underground of the West African music scene. His riveting growl and main instrument, the doso n'goni, still strike with a profound delivery.

Formed in 2013, the band just released their first album, Embroidery, which delivers a wide sonic spectrum of dark atmospheres, soft melodies, heavy riffs, long-duration songs, varied emotions and the musicalization of a larger concept. Their first song, Fatum, is a sample of this, since it contemplates melodic, dark, dramatic and emotional passages, and was the one used by the band to fundraise the album release through a successful crowdfunding campaign.

How do you try to capture the music of such a large, rich area as West Africa on one disc? The answer, of course, is that you can't, although this compilation does glide over some of the high spots – but only some. So there are classic performances by Mali's Super Rail Band and Ali Farka Toure, plus Orchestra Baobob, revealing the influence Cuban music had on the nascent homegrown scenes in both Senegal and Mali.

The 1960s and 1970s across Africa were decades defined by bright optimism and clashing sensibilities. Music plunged through the heart of this dynamic time and was a powerful tool of expression. Far-out psychedelic-sounding rock mixed with a thick dollop of deep funk and soul became the sound of a generation.

The Original Sound Of Mali samples tracks from across the landlocked West African country. Has Psychedelic Rock vie with Afro-Cuban Rhumba. Tumbling drums and swirling Vox Continental. Ray Manzarek backing the Lizard King`s thing while Abel Lima E Les Sofas launch into a Cabo Verde killer. Fela-Like keys and brass punctuation. The Jazz of Satchmo`s muted horn. Guitars that move between acoustic strum, Link Wray twang, hypnotic snaking figures, and virtuoso Blues picking. Flute and violin in a duet that recalls Shadow`s D`Hardest. Balaphon Jams and Funk as tight as The Daktaris covering James Brown. Grooves as loose as the Lijadu Sisters. Vocals in carnival chant, or Salif Keita`s plaintive soar. Tempos that rise and fall as naturally as imagined tides.
