Documentaries exploring ecosystems around the world, It’s unfortunate that this series comes so soon after Secrets of Our Living Planet. Where Chris Packham had an hour to explore small acts of symbiosis within ecosystems, Steve Backshall has to narrate the story of entire ecosystems in half that time.

Australia is home to an entirely unique ecosystem of plants and animals cut off and protected from the rest of the word. With this unique ecosystem comes a unique soundscape of birds, insects, and animals with their own unusual mating calls, shrieks, and songs. While back home, composer and producer Liam Fox O’Brien went on a deeply nostalgic treasure hunting mission, after having not been home for 3+ years since Covid, to document and collect these rich sounds of the surrounding bushland and countrysides outside of Melbourne.

Malegría, Reyna Tropical’s long-anticipated debut full-length album, is at once a vibrant arrival and an electrifying bridge. The portmanteau, born from a 1998 Manu Chao song by the same name, is akin to bittersweet and blends the Spanish “mal” which means “bad" and “alegría” which means “happiness.” It marks Reyna Tropical’s movement from a duo to a solo project. The album is a contemporary celebration and continuation of wide-reaching cultural traditions—from Congolese, Peruvian, and Colombian rhythms to revolutionary artists like lesbian guitarist-singer Chavela Vargas—these influences meld and are remixed through the distinctive lens of trailblazing guitarist and songwriter Fabi Reyna. Traversing themes including queer love, feminine sensuality, and the transformative power of intentional relations to the earth, Malegría spotlights narratives often pushed to the margins and offers them a sonic homeland.

Asia is the largest and most extreme continent on our planet, stretching from the Arctic Circle in the north to the tropical forests on the equator. The animals here face the hottest deserts, tallest jungles and highest mountains found anywhere on Earth. But the continent has not always looked like this. These extreme worlds were created when India collided with the rest of Asia 30 million years ago, shaping the continent as we know it today. Animals here have adapted to the extreme environments in almost unbelievable ways.
