A period of only a few years, beginning around 1954, saw the emergence of a sound that, along with jazz, came to define the 20th century. It was as much an explosion as a revolution. Creativity and cultural change were everywhere as white musicians grafted black jump blues onto country and western music. This 64-track Dutch import captures the zeitgeist perfectly, packed as it is with some of the greatest songs of the era, many of them from Sun Studios in Memphis. Part of a perfectly-mastered five-volume series, the discount two-CD set has a nice mix of classic cuts and rarities. Here's a track listing with artists, among them Johnny Burnette, Ricky Nelson, Gene Vincent, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and many more fantastic founders, in addition to country legends who knew how to rock like Johnny Cash and Wanda Jackson. You can call it anything you like hillbilly, rockabilly, rock 'n' roll, rock just as long as you call it great.
