Genre: Folk-Rock | Label: BGO Records

Digitally re-mastered two-for containing a pair of albums from the American singer/songwriter on one CD: Contribution (1970) and Second Contribution (1971). Shawn Phillips is one of most fascinating and enigmatic artists to come out of the early '70's singer/songwriter boom. The fact that he was a musician as much as a singer/songwriter made him stand out, and his refusal to shape his music which crosses between Folk-Rock, Jazz, Progressive, Pop and Classical to anyone else's expectations has allowed him to hold onto a large and dedicated following.

For a change, the late 1960s yielded up a supergroup that lived up to its hype and then some. Ginger Baker's Air Force was recorded live at Royal Albert Hall in January of 1970 - in fact, this may be the best-sounding live album ever to come out of that notoriously difficult venue - at a show that must have been a wonder to watch, as the ten-piece band blazed away in sheets of sound, projected delicate flute parts behind multi-layered African percussion, or built their songs up Bolero-like, out of rhythms from a single instrument into huge jazz-cum-R&B crescendos. Considering that this was only their second gig, the group sounds astonishingly tight, which greatly reduces the level of self-indulgence that one would expect to find on an album where five of the seven tracks run in excess of ten minutes…

The return of Yard Act. Where’s My Utopia? is the follow up to the Leeds band’s critically-acclaimed debut record The Overload which arrived in January 2022. Written in snapshots of time between a relentless touring schedule, and produced jointly by the band and Gorillaz’ Remi Kabaka Jr, the quartet’s second act is a giant leap forward into broad and playful new sonic waters. Across the record, influences ranging from Fela Kuti to Ennio Moricone via Spiller’s ‘00s pop smash ‘Groovejet’ make themselves known.
