Originally intended as a side-project, Subsignal were founded back in 2007 by former Sieges Even members Arno Menses (Vocals) and Markus Steffen (Guitars). The first result of this collaboration was a song called ‘A Wallflower On The Day Of Saint Juliana’ which eventually appeared under the title ‘Eyes Wide Open’ on the 2007-Sieges Even-output ‘Paramount’. After Arno and Markus had left the band in the summer of 2008, they immediately started to look for adequate musicians to turn the project into a functional ‘real’ band. The first to join was Ralf Schwager (Bass), who was known for his work with German progmetal outfit Dreamscape. The line-up was completed by the Dutch drummer Roel van Helden (Sun Caged) and keyboarder David Bertok (also Dreamscape).

The use of the word gold in the album title is ironic, since a collection of outtakes and leftovers is generally considered to weigh in well under the gold scale. With a group such as the evolving Coil collaboration, however, there's the chance that a well-conceived collection of archive material could have quite a positive impact, whatever the relative status of individual tracks in terms of what projects they were first created for. Rejected material can become a highlight out of a combination of whatever unusual aspects already exist in a piece as well as the dramatic impact of a newly conceived program flow. Gold Is the Metal is a great example of this since the individual tracks continually present challenges to the listener combined with a sonic magnetism…

Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring & Petruskha - Pierre Boulez

Igor Stravinsky's ballets Le Sacre du Printemps & Pétrouchka - Pierre Boulez w/ Cleveland Orchestra & New York Philharmonic
1 CD, 68:56 | A D D | Sony Classics | EAC, FLAC tracks, CUE, Logs | LQ Scans | RS | 338 MB
Classical - Modern period | Orchestral Music - Ballet | Composed 1947, 1911 | Recording 1969, 1971

Gramophone review, Sep 92:
Even in these days of super-efficient Rites and Petrushkas, Boulez can still find in these scores many subtle and beautiful details that are lost in the rush or the brilliance of some showier readings, and his precision of ear is audible on page after page.
