Born into a deeply religious family in Philadelphia on 19th December 1935, Robert Henry Bobby Timmons took his first musical steps at a young age. Taught piano as a child by his uncle Robert Habershaw, who also taught John Coltrane's future pianist Alfred McCoy Tyner, the young Bobby joined a family wide tradition of producing musical prodigies. The son and grandson of ministers, Timmons first performed at the family church where, at times, he played alongside future jazz drummer Albert Tootie Heath. He was awarded a scholarship to the Philadelphia Musical Academy after graduating high school. In 1954, Timmons moved to New York and began a fruitful career as a session musician. His debut recording session was with trumpeter Kenny Dorham in 1956, following which, during '56 and '57, he worked with other pioneering players such as Chet Baker, Maynard Ferguson, Curtis Fuller, Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan.

Evans, born in New Jersey in 1929, was by far the most individual and influential pianist to emerge during the 'hard bop' era of late-Fifties jazz. He created his own niche and, rather than try to fit into any particular style himself, allowed his own to fit in with others should they be interested. Evans was one of very few white musicians who most (though not all) black musicians were willing to accommodate. Enjoy 5 of his original jazz albums from the Riverside years from this superb 5 disc collection: "Waltz For Debby", "Moon Beams", "How My Heart Sings!", "Interplay" and "Know What I Mean?".

Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane - The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings (2006) [2CD]

This fine two-disc set brings together all the recordings Thelonious Monk made for the small, influential Riverside label in 1957. The piano eccentric cut excellent versions of some of his best compositions during that year, including "Off Minor," "Epistrophy," "Well, You Needn't," and the lovely "Ruby My Dear." The exhilarating saxophone work of John Coltrane makes these dates instant classics. Like most "complete sessions," the set features plenty of false starts and alternate takes that might seem extraneous to the casual fan, but Monk fanatics will be overjoyed at being provided with a glimpse into the brilliant artist's studio process.

Since their debut, Riverside has always carried the 'Porcupine Tree's little brother act' label. Yet, with that main comparison now on hiatus during extensive Steven Wilson solo work and touring underway, this may be the opportunity for the formerly mentioned four-piece group to step forward and make a significant impact in the international progressive rock community…

Riverside Profiles contains previously released tracks taken from the alto saxophonist and bandleader's stint with the label from 1959 to 1963. The nine tracks, aimed at the casual listener, include the classics "This Here," "Dizzy's Business," "Jive Samba," "Work Song," and "African Waltz." Cannonball Adderley is backed by an extraordinary roster of jazz musicians, including cornetist brother Nat Adderley; saxophonists Yusef Lateef and Oliver Nelson; trumpeter Blue Mitchell; pianists Bobby Timmons, Bill Evans, and Barry Harris; bassist Sam Jones; and drummers Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, and Louis Hayes. The stellar band lineups and musicianship make this an excellent sampler for the novice. For a limited time, the first pressings in this series include a free bonus compilation CD of Riverside artists. ~ AllMusic Review by Al Campbell

Although most Wes Montgomery fans associate his playing with strings with his later A&M and Verve recordings, the influential guitarist actually fronted a string section for the first time on this Riverside date from 1963, which had the ironic name of Fusion. As with his later albums, Montgomery's guitar solos here are brief and melodic but the jazz content is fairly high even if the emphasis is (with the exception of "Tune Up") on ballads.

This magnificent 12-CD set contains all of Bill Evans' Riverside recordings as a leader, an extremely important period in the influential pianist's development. The first session predates Evans' period with the Miles Davis Sextet and other significant sessions include his sets with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian (highlighted by the marathon Village Vanguard session of June 25, 1961), Evans' return nearly a year after LaFaro's death in a car accident with a new trio (consisting of Motian and bassist Chuck Israels), a sideman set with altoist Cannonball Adderley, the Interplay sessions with either trumpeter Freddie Hubbard or tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, an extensive and rather somber solo set, and a 1963 appearance at Shelly's Manne Hole with bassist Israels and drummer Larry Bunker.
