Platinum Hook was a slick R&B/Funk combo who released three albums on Motown between 1978 and 1983. Having signed to the label for their debut eponymous release in 1978, Platinum Hook offered up a smooth and engaging R&B/Funk sound that more than matched their label mates and other rivals of the time. Platinum Hook opens with the tight club groove Bittersweet, a horn and synth led track that introduces the groups lead vocalists Tina Renee Stanford and Stephen Daniels to blistering effect. Track 2 is an excellent cover of Shotgun's mid-tempo funk jam from the previous year, Hotline. ''Til I Met You and Lover What You've Done (To Me) are both smooth soul ballads that still bring the funk into the rhythms and help round out the albums overall sound. Standing On The Verge (Of Getting It On), a cover of the Funkadelic classic, can hold its head up high to the original.

Pressed between 1943 and 1949, V Discs (or Victory Discs) boosted the morale of U.S. soldiers at the warfront and kept them up to date with the latest music from home. They were freely distributed but forbidden for sale, and the FBI would even have powers to destroy all copies in circulation at war’s end. Every great artist of the period made a patriotic gesture, and the records contained every genre: jazz, classical, pop, blues and folk. Jazz was fashionable then and took the lion’s share; it became an emblem for the liberators of Europe before spreading across the world. This 4CD set compiled by Jean-Baptiste Mersiol is a portrait in sound of American music trends during World War II, but it also reserves surprises in the form of some fantastic treasures, like the very first version of Louis Prima’s international standard, “Just A Gigolo”, and messages to the troops sent by the artists themselves. The album was produced by internationally renowned producer and audio engineer Hans-Martin Buff (i.a. Prince, Scorpions). The recordings were made in November 2017 at Abbey Road Studios under the musical supervision of producer and bassist Livingstone Brown (i.a. Robin Trower, Tina Turner), with Luke Smith on keyboard (i.a. Amy Winehouse), Luca Boscagin at the guitar (i.a. John Abercrombie) and Josh “Nasty” McKenzie on drums (i.a. Wretch 32). The collaboration was extraordinarily inspiring for everyone and a foundation for the musical journey ahead. Further contributors to the album were Hamburg-based violinist Stefan Pintev (G-strings) as well as US-based trombone player Michael B. Nelson (hornheads).
